Remote rc65x

I bought a toshiba dvd/vcr recorder dvr620ku . I got it connected by their directions for an external tuner . I only got as far as initial setting . It says press the button on the tv's remote that accesses the external input channel and I'm supposed to get the " initial setting " menu . I have Directv remote RC65X and am getting nowhere .
