Replacing VIP 722 w/ Same - Question Please

I was not able to find the clear answer I need searching the Forum.

I have a VIP 722 that failed. (I don't want to upgrade). If I replace it with the same model (new) VIP 722, is all I have to do is pull out the smart card from the failed receiver and put in new receiver? What will I have to do to get the new 722 receiver to work? Thanks

So there would be one of two ways you could go -- purchase a 722 that isn't on an account and is purchased (not leased) and you'd contact us to deactivate the old one and activate the new one, no switching of smart cards needed because we'd use the new one's smart card information to activate it.

The other route is if you contacted us, we went through any applicable troubleshooting steps and if it's leased we'd be able to send you out a new one for the cost of shipping, and if you have Dish Protect Silver shipping would be waived so it would be a free swap. If it's purchased, there may be a cost to purchase a new one but we wouldn't be able to see that unless we're looking at your account. After you received the new one it would have instructions on setting it up and it'll let you know when to contact us to activate it.

Yes, they're legit. Scott doesn't allow just anybody to use an account by that name.

Huh. I just noticed that their link is obfuscated. But if you do click on it, you will see the Dish website come up.

I worry about the "brand new" 722 you bought online. I don't think there are any new receivers available anywhere. If there are, you will need to get Dish to ship you another smart card to go in the front. I owned (and still own) a 722 and it went through two card changes.

I agree with TheKrell. I'd be very dubious about claims of a 'virgin' 722. I don't know when they stopped making them (I'm sure someone here does), but it's been several years, I'd bet.

My guess is this is a refurb, the way to tell is by the serial number. New ones start with an R, refurbs begin with a W.

I thought I struck gold with a brand new 612 last year, it only lasted about 8 months before the power supply went bad. Opened it up and there were 6-7 capacitors that were bulging.

The ViP722 series is OLD. Any replacement is going to be a refurb with an OLD HDD and electronics.

Bad move. Get an H3.

Good luck with the receiver. As others have noted, the 722k is Ark of the Covenant old, and while an absolute beast dollar for dollar, there are no "new" ones anymore.

If you have a 722 and upgrade to H3, expect to pay $15 more than you are now.

I have a 722 refurb provided by Dish that I pay $7 per month for. Upgrading to H3 would cost me $100 service charge for a new hybrid LNB, plus $15 a month for the H3. My current monthly $7 would cover the Joey I would need for the second TV, which is an old SD TV. I could save some on the $100 LNB upgrade by getting the protection plan for the required 6 months.

I moved on to a Wally and wonder why I didn't do so sooner. The ViP receivers were real workhorses and still have a place in my heart, but it was time to move on.

I have one word for you, and it is "CUI"! Of course I can't talk since I now have an H3. BTW - I'm the only one using it, though. My wife and daughter have both moved on to streaming and don't use our Joeys. Well, my wife is still using the 54 remote, but only because our Vizio TV remote crapped out.

Interesting. I also mostly use my 54 remote to control my Vizio TV these days, even though the remote that came with it still works just fine.

I actually like the CUI. But your post brings up a good point on why I didn't go with a Hopper. This isn't 2004, we don't need to have each TV in the house watching a different satellite TV channel at the same time. The Wally is feeding all the TVs in the house with a HDMI over coax adapter, with Dish Anywhere (some channels are offered live) and other streaming services we have more than enough to watch. The Wally offers 4 tuners with no additional fees, don't have to pay for locals...it's less than an OTT service and offers a lot more functionality.

Nice review! I would just specify that those are two satellite tuners and two OTA tuners, in case someone who is not already familiar with the Wally happens to be reading this.

Carbon user interface; that's what Dish calls it. I gather it's darker than the GUI that came before, but I never saw it myself so I don't know.
