I was asking myself the same thing the other day when I found the following link:

But, before you run out and try to convert everything to RGB because the standard carries more color information, remember the MPEG-2 which is used both in the standard definition and HDTV coverts everything to YUV.

So, if you use RGB out of the reciever you are relying on the reciever to have a better YUV to RGB conversion than your TV.

Also remember that the color may start in RGB, but it is converted to YUV then compressed a lot in MPEG-2.
