Silicondust launches Grand Slam MDU TV

That assumes the apartment complex has a good ethernet network setup in order to do this.

Can you imagine the slow downs in prime time or a bad network?
i wonder if they will charge for the service.. i wonder if they will do contracts for bulk discounts like cable wich are a ripoff and only benefit the LL. i wonder if there will be ad's on the screen to sell people more BS 🤔.

can you imagine all of the pissed off people if there's a slow network or a bad network during football . people tend to forget if the internets go down it all goes down  :coco. then there's the rent increase to recover the ROI of the system and not everyone will want it. and then the LL will be called an AHOLE for raising the rent ;). ide rather bundle internet into the rent and let the people buy or rent there modems and routers from the cable co i still get a kick back... I bet that HOA'S will love it since they don't like satellite dishes on homes then there goes the HOA dues!!!

This assumes the multi-unit dwellings are connected through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Maybe MoCa? I'm curious what the end TV uses to watch this content being received by the SiliconDust unit and server. They say "no receiver", but would a normal TV be able to access the SiliconDust server for content? Maybe if it was a SmartTV with DLNA capability. Chances are the resident would want a Roku/FireTV/AppleTV box to have the best experience.

Then, the Network Analyst in me wonders how you could have a Private LAN for the SiliconDust content and allow the residents to also have their own Internet provider.

The obvious uses for something like this are hotels and hospitals. Don't want to pay for cable to go with streaming services (where people would presumably bring their own accounts)? Here's a baseline free TV service that probably pays for itself pretty quick. Price it out, $16000 converts to $266.67/month over five years. I have to imagine cable/satellite service costs more than that depending on the size of the installation.

It's a good concept for sure, but I wonder how realistic it is given the changes going on with ATSC. If this device is only ATSC 2.0 it's going to have a short life span, and even if it is ATSC 3.0 their track record with DRM isn't good at all. In a few years you may have a $16k paperweight.

Never did the MDU with sat. ive always let renters install there own stuff... better of that way let them deal with it on there own vs one system where if something goes down it all goes down and your the AHOLE for it not working :biggrin . if i remember correctly consumers didn't have as much choice in packages with an MDU installed unit vs there own stuff. then you need to deal with the installer...
