Maybe they don't want to take it back cause the aftermath of bursting it on the way home might be worse than if it burnt in open space.

"Take it back"? What are you talking about? It is and always will remain in open space. Satellites in geosynchronous orbit are never recovered or sent back to earth. They get put into a so-called "graveyard orbit" when they retire, a few hundred miles above the geosynchrous orbit.
 
If they are worried about this thing exploding why are they going to raise the orbit and keep it in space, which will then have more junk floating around vs. causing it to burn up in the atmosphere?
All of the DirecTV satellites are in Geostationary Orbit, which is 22,236 Miles above the surface of the planet. This means NONE of these types of satellites are Capable of being brought back to the earth.

All Geo Stationary satellites are moved several hundreds of miles above their working orbit so they won't interfere with other satellites in that orbit, when their serviceable life is over.
