Switching between internal and external harddrive

I have an HR24-200 receiver. If I plug in an external hard drive I assume it will get formatted to correctly work with the DirecTV receiver. My questions are:

1. will recordings on the internal HD remain intact?
2. If/when I unplug the external HD, will the internal drive be reformatted?
3. What type and largest size external drive can be used?

My better half is an old movie nut and records a lot of old movies to watch later on (when I am not around). I want to give her more storage space but I don't want to delete what she has already recorded.

3) WD Green and AV-GP drives work well; WD external drives work well (already in case); 2TB max

Jason & I both are using docks with internal drives plugged in, with these you can power down and add a new drive pretty easily.

35LKSA, don't forget you need an esata hard drive. USB won't work.

I'm using a Seagate 1.5TB, don't remember the model # though. (Might be a Free Agent)
