Making money sure, but not a ton of money. Sorry but 35million is chump change in the grand scheme of things. Thats not even enough to cover say A-Rod in the height of his contract. If they bought a player like him now they have 0 profit. Not good business sense now is it?

First of all, if you are saying A-Rod makes $35 million/year, that is far from the truth. Second of all, A-Rod is not the only player available to spend money on. With good management you can improve your team greatly with $35 million, but some owners choose not to.

Yes the Marlins choose not to spend ALL there money. They are in this business to make money.

35million could get you maybe 2 stars maybe three. But then you are broke. No more profit. What happens next year if ticket sales are down? Now your even deeper in the hole.

The marlins were according to ESPN, #25 in player salaries in 2009. But they came in second place in the NL East. Ahead of the Braves (15th in salary) The Mets (5th in Salary) and the Nationals (22nd in salary) Not to mention Better records then the Cubs (3rd in salary), etc.

So it seems to me even though they kept a little money they still did better then teams who spent more then them.

Sure they could spend another 15-20 million and get 2 more good players, and it may even make them win the NL East. But I cant really be that mad at them for taking there profit this year. Who knows maybe they are building a war chest to buy another world series?

Here are the players the Twins signed this off-season:

Carl Pavano $7 million
Jim Thome $1.5 million
Orlando Hudson $5 million

Toronto signed their closer, Kevin Gregg, to a $2.75 million contract

Texas signed Rich Harden to a $7.25 million contract

Cincinnati signed Orlando Cabrera to a $3 million contract

San Francisco signed Aubrey Huff to a $3 milion contract

Put them altogether and you get $30 million for:
Carl Pavano
Jim Thome
Orlando Hudson
Kevin Gregg
Rich Harden
Orlando Cabrera
Aubrey Huff

All this for $30 million and you still get to pocket $5 million.

Net out the salaries of the seven guys you are going to drop if you sign these guys, and the cost goes down from $30 million. Add in extra revenue if your team plays better with these guys in the lineup, and your cost goes down further. Add in playoff revenue if these guys help you qualify, and your cost goes down exponentially.

I know these guys may not fill the Marlins' specific needs (though all teams need pitching), but you get the idea. You don't have to spend $35 million on two overpaid superstars. There is a lot of talent out there at a decent price...that's why the Yankees cannot buy the championship every year.

But you have to do some due diligence and make good baseball decisions like the above teams did.

Well of course, you have to make good baseball decisions. That is where the Marlins have failed.

They could own that roster you just posted and still keep the 30million by getting rid of people who are not as good as the new comers.

BUT, who is to say that you have to add A-Rod, when you can add to VERY good players for $15 million a year? And also remember that those contracts can be back end heavy. Your bring-up up A-Rod is not the norm, but an exception to the rule.

BUT, if you tell your fans that they cannot spend on free agents because you are LOSING money, then hell ya, you have been lied to! It is one thing to say, 'look, we are spending the money in other areas....scouting, minor leagues, construction cost to the/a new stadium...." Fans with half a brain would accept that. But to blantantly state, 'hey, we cannot spend money on free agents because we are not making money and account afford it.....'..that is BS and a flat out lie. Checkout what Sampson, President of Operations for the Marlins stated yesterday on the Dan LeBetard show:

The Flagship Station for South Florida Sports

On the section that states "790 the Ticket on demand", the first audio is of Sampson. LeBatard was hitting him hard with questions....I was VERY shocked that he did not throw softball questions, especially since 790 the Ticket is the broadcast station for Marlin games.

Excellent post....and that ain't a bad team...hmmm.....;)

The have failed in adding payroll. But as a team performing, you cannot say that. They have been pretty competitive in a very tough division that has spent alot more money than they have.

Do you know if that 35million they just made is going to pay for the stadium or not?

They have remained competitive and saved some money. That sounds like a good thing for the team no?

Do you know if that 35million they just made is going to pay for the stadium or not?

They stated that they were saving for stadium cost AFTER THE FACT. IF they had stated that from day one, there isn't a single Marlins fan that would not have sided with them. IF you get a chance, LISTEN to the at interview from the link I posted from 790 The Ticket's interview with team president Sampson.

You will hear more back peddling and "rope-adoping" than Ali vs. Frazer.

It's a great thing...when you do not lie to the fanbase! It is one thing to say, 'we did not make the profits we hoped/expected.....' blah, blah, blah.....

...it's another to say, 'we are losing money and therefore we have to trade one of the best young hitters in all of baseball in Miguel Cabrera....'

..*cough* bullsh!7 *cough* :rant::rolleyes:
