For anyone wanting to give Linux a try, I installed Ubuntu 8.10 this weekend, and I am impressed. I can't afford to buy a new Windows XP license. I played around a lot with Linux years ago when X Windows was still pretty raw. I must say, it has come a LONG way. I first installed openSUSE and it worked decent, but not well enough to be my everyday OS. I installed Ubuntu next, and it works perfectly. I have added devices slowly to it to see if any bugs popped up, but it has been rock solid so far. Even my digital camera has no compatibility issues.

I considered this install of Linux as temporary until I could afford Windows XP (for simple compatibility reasons) but I think this is going to be my permanent OS.

So for anyone wanting to give Linux a try, Ubuntu Linux is a very impressive product. I am just hoping that the awful economy doesn't claim this company as a victim.

I really like Ubuntu and openSUSE in the role of Windows replacements. openSUSE requires more configuration than Ubuntu, but both are excellent OSs. Xubuntu is a good alternative for lower-spec machines (1.5-2 gig processor, 500 meg - 1 gig RAM). I think Ubuntu will make it through our economic downturn just fine. It has a billionaire backing it :D.

I use Xbuntu in one of my systems, a slight difference Distro from Ubuntu . :)

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop & I'm very happy with it. I first set it up as dual boot but eventually got rid of Vista. I still have XP on my laptop for itunes. I need itunes for my itouch. Try ubuntu you'll like it!

Thank you. I've previously used Xandros, but I guess I'll install Ubuntu on an old laptop I've got.

Mint is very user friendly, as well. It's basically Ubuntu with preloaded codecs and some nice usability tweaks. Again, the Xubuntu version is best for older machines.
