Universal remote vs Original

I'm looking at new receivers. Some of the units come with a universal remote instead of the original remote.
The universal remote is marked with TV/VCR/DVD/STD.
Does the universal remote work as good as the original?

If they are supplied with a new unit, from the factory, they are set up to work with the STB. They are "Multi-purpose" and not really universal remotes and as such would be considered original to the STB. But, they are teachable or programable to work with your other EQ. as listed. A Universal remote "is advertised" teachable to work with all the listed EQ.

yes they work fine. As long as its the factory remote

I know my Coolsat 5000 is "universal" but it controls tv, dvd & vcr along with the Coolsat

Sorry I'm so late responding back.
I had to be away for a few days.
I'm looking at a Captiveworks 800. The add states the rec is new and the company is an authorized dealer, so I hope everything is ok.

I think you were right awhile back when you suggested my receiver may have a "transponder overload". I had several hundred programed into my receiver and it only holds 50, according to a website I reviewed.
The new receiver I am looking at holds 5000.
