So I'm finally upgrading to genie drv along with 3 genie minis...getting ride of 2 HD dvrs and 2 hd receivers. Somebody told me that I should keep 1 of my HD dvrs instead of replacing it with a genie mini. He said this would allow me to keep my recorded shows. Is there any other advantage to keeping one of my HD dvrs? And will this in any way "screw up" the genie system and not maximize features/functions? Thanks.

You don't want minis or clients, they are buggy. They also disconnect from the main system frequently and cause lots of problems. Keep as many HR2x receivers as will fit on your account, I am not sure how many that is.

:welcome to Satelliteguys Sport24728!

Some have had issues with clients disconnecting, having lag issues. The biggest issue for me is losing recording backup in case of problems with the genie. Are you getting an HS17 genie? It's the newest model and only works with clients, no dvrs. The HR44 and HR54 genies do work with dvrs.

keep the dvrs, replace 1 receiver with a genie
minis are paperweights, nothing more

Now you guys have me worried, lol. I guess I should've asked this earlier, but what's the advantage of the genie over my current system? I think I will definitely keep 1 HD dvr, but the 2nd DVR is kind of acting up (it almost goes into this scrambled picture mode during commercials, and you have to change the channel, then turn back, in order to clear it up).

Sorry for the dumb questions (I'm not tech savy). So adding the genie allows me to record more shows, and that's still true whether I have mini genies or my current HD dvrs on my extra televisions? And it also gives me 4K capability?

for 4k you have to have a c61k mine(or rvu)
each mini uses a tuner from the genie
so if a mini is in use you lose 1 recording capability
3 minis and you lose 3 tuners for recording

So I should put genie dvr on my main tv...keep HD dvr on my master bedroom tv...move HD dvr to my living room tv...and mini genie on son's tv. And then check to see if I can get a warranty replacement on the HD dvr that has been acting up.

put a 4k mini on the 4k tv, replace one receiver with genie
warranty the faulty dvr

note a genie will not output 4k on its own, it must be a mini

I just thought of another question. Will I be able to watch recorded shows in all 4 rooms, or will it depend which unit a show is recorded on?

I have the HS17 here along with 2 C61K minis and 2 wireless minis. Is it perfect? No, but the 4K picture is absolutely stunning though the programming is quite limited.

Be aware that if you go with HR54 you'll pay for the Genie and any receivers. With the HS17 you pay for the minis only. Downside to the HS17 as already pointed out is that you can't use the other DVRs.

Either way, make sure the TV has capable HDMI inputs for the 4K. Not every set does and some, like my Samsung only have one input capable of 4K.

.
stop misleading people
sure you dont pay for the hs17, because it can feed a tv
downside of a mini is it cost the same per month has a dvr, genie, or reciver
hs17+3 minis cost the same per month as hr54 and 2 minis
both setup will feed 3 tvs

I thought the HS17 could NOT feed a TV? (Rendering that another downgrade that Directv calls an upgrade)
