What options do I have?

if they sent out the same model then there is no contract extension...they replaced the one that died

Seriously...do this...call back and right away say RETENTION....you will get retention who knows what the hell to do and will fix it. You have had more issues in the last week with them than I have had in the last 2 1/2 years (which has been no issues honestly)

I'm certainly going to do this tomorrow right after work. After my mom waited 3 hours I called DirecTV and finally got the receiver activated.

However, now there is another problem. :)

My mom now sees a blue banner at the bottom saying no signal on sat 2 which is because only 1 coax is coming from the dish since it is an old system. With the first DVR only 1 coax was attached to SAT 1 and no connection on SAT 2 and it worked fine. Is there a menu item to disable SAT 2?

well the manual was partially useless so lets see if I remember

from the manual
Press MENU, select "Parental, Fav's & Setup", then "System Setup"
select satellite (should be 2nd one on the list)
repeat setup

it will repeat the satellite setup. Should be on
18" round
multiswitch
and I think the 3rd option says "tuners" dual or single....switch to single

(its been so long since I had the R15 so I'm trying to go off my foggy memory)

You're the best! Thank you so much for your help. I'll let my mom know, so that she can finally begin watching TV.

when you help your mom over the phone when she gets to the repeat satellite setup make sure there is an option that says tuner single or dual. Have her read it to you what it says on screen.
I dont think the 2nd line will say multiswitch since it isnt SWM compatible

I just got off the phone with my mom and she and I are getting very frustrated. I'm about to call DirecTV and give them a piece of my mind.

1) Mom thinks receiver is defective since a DirecTV logo comes on the screen up to 10 times per hour. This could be due to the SAT 2 not being hooked up.
2) I had my mom go to the setup menu and she saw 18" dish, multiswitch and dual. I had her highlight dual and select left or right around the select button to see if single appears. She said she only sees continue to see signal strength. After spending 30 plus minutes repeating the dish setup 4 or 5 times she wanted to stop. I'm going to see if I can find some manuals or screenshots of this menu, so I can help her. She said single tuner doesn't appear. The model I believe is R15-300.

For now this nightmare continues and my mom is without TV.

Everything ice said is true but the single/dual mode goes up and down. Have her select dual then press select this will let her select single. Then she will hit continue

Thank you so much! After spending another hour on the phone and having my mom go through the menu selections she finally found out how to select single. The receiver then rebooted and all is well now.

I'm still going to call DirecTV tomorrow and complain. Perhaps they will reimburse my mom for the time lost and / or give her a movie channel for a few months for her troubles.

Glad to see this is fixed and you didn't have to make the long trip to accomplish it. :)

thanks for adding that. I forget its up/down after you hit select ;)
(when you do it so many times you just "know" what to do and sometimes I forget when helping folks) ;)

I would. If you dont like the answer you get, hang up and call back. I'd try retention too because they usually can do more

What options do I have?

My parents have had DirecTV for many years and still have a single LNB 18" dish system attached to a H15-500 SD DVR receiver. My father passed away last year and my mom still enjoys the DirecTV service, but never uses the DVR yet still pays the monthly DVR fee. As of last Sunday the channels have been noisey and the screen goes black after a few minutes.

Since I live 5 hours away from my mom I have been trying to help her resolve the problem over the phone. I had her verify that the video output cables are still fully inserted into the back of the HD TV and she said yes. She also told me that she removed and reinserted the security card and hit the reset button, but the receiver never finished rebooting. Instead the TV just went dark and the light on the middle of the receiver went out. I also asked if the area recently had lightening and she said no. I thought perhaps the LNB went bad, but I guess thats not the case.

Questions:
1) How much would it cost to have a technician come to the home to fix the problem?
2) Should she upgrade the receiver to HD since her TV is HD? If so, what model?
3) What would you do?

I was wondering if perhaps I should purchase a new dish, LNB and receiver on EBay and install the system myself for my mom.

Well, if she has the protection plan it would be free if not it won't BUT there is a way around that. If calling for a upgrade they'd be coming out for free to do the upgrade.

So I would call for a upgrade to HD, get a H24 (someone said HR24 but you said she does not use DVR's so a H24 is what would be best (it's what I use)). They'll install a new Slimline-3 dish as part of the upgrade.

I would still upgrade to HD, a SD DirecTV receiver on a HDTV looks horrid.

Also, never let your mother talk to DirecTV alone. Do a three way call if DirecTV insists on talking with your mother.

I was getting frustrated just reading your story!
