What's the difference in the Joeys?

Set that H+ in a safe place and when and if you go to another provider you can give it back to them if they request it. Now, Amazon Prime works on the Joey 3, 4K Joey, and the Joey 4. The Joey 4 gets its apps from Android while the 3 and 4K are built in. Now, if all you are interested in is Amazon all you really need is a Joey 3. You can get that from DISH as a replacement for an older Joey or a new location.
Yes. Thank you very much as I forgot some of those details. I guess J3 with Prime will work fine for now. That tv does not need 4K at this point as if any tv does.

Whatever. It's a fee so it's rent to me and I was aware that rent is paid on the equipment whether or not you bought it. Just like I'm renting an internet connection so I can post on SatelliteGuys, I rent access from Dish for my joey. This is a satellite forum. I'm not interested in transaction terms as long as they can be comprehended. Dealt with them in college and still do with all the stuff I pay for each month.

The only reason I mentioned it, is because the way you worded it sounded like it shouldn't have to be paid if the equipment is purchased. And a lot if people feel the same way. So just clarifying why you have to pay it.

Just got new equipment today. Was supposed to be a hopper 3 and 4K Joey and Wireless Joey.
Was told the 4K Joey was trash and pointless so stay away from it. Had to move to a wired Joey4 instead which requires you to have a hopper Plus on your account. They did not connect it because I didn't want it but had to add it to my account for the Joey 4 to live there. Then they were going to give me a wireless Joey for but they didn't have one on the truck so I kept my existing Wireless Joey. A joey 4 would not work with a hopper 3 without the Plus box being activated on my account.

That is total nonsense. We have several people here who have Joey 4s working just fine without the need for the Hopper+ being activated or even on the premise. They bought their own Joey 4 and got it activated over the phone. You may need to download the Android files to the Hopper 3. You can do this by pressing Home 3 times, scroll down to Tools, go over to Technician Settings, and then Download ATV files. Once those files are on your Hopper 3 your Joey 4 should pick up the appropriate file and work just fine.

Joey 4's will work without the plus. The will bring it out, and may force the install, but it can be removed and everything will work fine. A good installer will help you uninstall it, or perhaps just leave it off.

There are advantages and disadvantages of the plus. All of the apps are android versions, and will enable 4K HDR on YouTube for one example.

The biggest current downside, is that the plus will not support multi-view/PIP.
That may change soon because those features are planned for Joey 4 as well.

The other issue is that the Joey4 and the plus always output 4K, and flag that as HDR, even for SDR content unless you disable enhanced HDMI on your TV.
The problem with that is that your picture settings on the TV generally should be adjusted differently for HDR content. (Typically different brightness i.e. 100% for HDR, and possibly different color settings as well.)

This is not a huge problem, but when I watch using the Joey, I normally leave HDMI set to standard, and ONLY change that setting to enhanced when watching HDR content.

DISH's Joey naming is odd.

They have the regular wired Joey.
They have the 4K Joey
They have the Wired Joey 4
They have the Wireless Joey 4

If I were getting a Joey now I would want one of the last two. The Joey 4's which are 4K and add in support for Android TV Apps.

I would stay far away from the 4K Joey as though it is named the 4K Joey it can not display like 4K from DISH in HDR which kind of makes it pointless as most of the live 4K from DISH is in HDR now.
Will the hopper 3 output HDR itself??? not everyone has an 85 inch screen in there bedrooms :biggrin. what about when the locals switch to ASTC 3.0 does dish have a workaround for that for people using an antenna and the usb dongle. i don't think the hopper 3 could be upgraded to receive ASTC 3.0??? i could be wrong on that. i wouldn't worry about 4k the best way to experience 4k is with a 4k blu ray player. if i did it all over again id'e get a wired joey 4 wireless ones can be hit or miss once you start moving it around the house:biggrin🤔:facepalm. you'll always get smoother signal transport being wired in via coax...

we own our own joey the monthly fee is 5.00 and not 7.00. unclear if it's 5.00 across the board or if it's 7.00 if you lease it??? but it's a mirror fee to mirror the programming from the main box to the client. could you imagine paying full programming costs for each client :biggrin . so it's not a lease fee. i don't know wht these companies call it a lease fee...

i also belive there charging us a 10.00 DVR fee and not the 15.00 DVR fee since we own our hopper 3. the 10.00 could be across the board or there giving us a little deal since it's an owned box.. i will have to look at the first bill when we get it!! we bought our hopper 3 as we wanted an SSD in it and not an HDD :biggrin

One mistake, Unlike the Hopper 3 the Joey 3 does not have YouTube.

i wouldn't worry about apps on clients. chances are everyone here has smart t.v.s. i know our sonys can load and open any apps faster than most of these client boxes can. the gemini was utterly slow it was awfull!!! though the gemini is a dated box...
