Why So Rude Towards New Members?

All our Brian is asking for is courtesy to new members and that does not seem unreasonable.

Why are members so judgemental, if a thread is contrary to the forum rules don't respond, report it and the Mods who will sort it.
Sat guys forum position is exceptionally clear in its rules. What is very inconcise is the actual law on so called "signal theft"

Dish Network is not so clean itself, it is public record they have had to pay over $100m out in litigation.

What is very clear is who pays > :rant:The subscriber!

I'm pleased you like the forum AFM

I think we should be understanding and try to convert people who were on the dark side to come over to the light.

I know I myself would like to see everyone who bought a FTA box for hacking to use it for something useful. Like the Nets at G16, Whitesprings TV, the NBC mux at 72w, ect....

Unfortunately there are some boxes that had software problems (like AC3 issues with KUsat 2600) that was never fixed in factory software, but was fixed in hackware.

We should treat the eye patch crowd that wants to change with kindness and understanding. Not with hatred and disgust. Everyone has made some type of mistake in the past. Most of us have learned from our mistakes. We should give the eye patch crowd that wants to change the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks for the invite and kind words Stogie! I just might show up on your doorstep one day....you've be warned......lol

Thanks for the tip spiffy. I'll keep in mind next time I want to find something and V-Bulletin wants to play "Stump the old fart"

Tron, Good point. I almost referenced that as well but presumed that was a given. It does bear noting. Thanks. I don't think we will ever see a target on this site like the others will (do?) have. Scott has a good rapport with Echostar, and I suspect that he would delete the entire FTA forum before he would allow that relationship to be compromised. That would leave a great number of lawful FTA TVRO operators as orphans, looking for a home that is the equal of what we have here now, but I could not blame him if it came to that.

CC - Best of luck finding a used setup in your locale and bringing your buddy into the C band fold. Anyone who's read my posts know my 1st true love of this hobby is C band. I realize as new members that one has a tendency to list one's experience and credentials for reference points recognition sake, but such actions in this case is counterproductive. In the case of your friend, I could see advising that instead -

"One should seek out and learn the ways of the legal FTA operator, become one with them and in tune with their ways and beliefs. Only then can the fruits of knowledge and experience be bestowed upon one.....grasshopper...."

completely avoiding any and all references to piracy terminology and equipment...ie hubs dongles etc.

What seems to be lost in this everybody hold hands and sing Cum-by-Ya, embrace the wayward hacker, and lead him into the light lovefest is that NO ONE is being shunned or excluded, just admonished to leave the hack talk at the door.

Is that an unreasonable request or concept that is impossible to grasp?

I want everyone who ever configured an FTA box or struggled with pointing a dish to learn and enjoy all this hobby can give (legally.....:p)

I want to do anything I can to help anyone interested achieve this.

I dont want to see the site degrade to where discussion of forbidden topics is perpetuated. If it comes down to having to remark negatively, or slap on the wrist, which may result in public embarrassment etc. AFAIC, if the result is it ceases, the ends justify the means.

But then again I'm for bringing back public hangings in the town square. I cant think of a better crime deterrent........

Many believe being "Politically Correct" to the point of infringing on Respect is acceptable. I do not.
Some dont know the difference between the two.

Dude is that the same KUSat 2600 I'm thinking about? I didnt think you still had that one.

I remember that only old hackerware gave it AC-3 and USALS so I loaded mine with it...was old N1 hackerware and Dish was way into N2 already :)

Personally, I feel the need to cease the physical abuse of this deceased equine carcass has long passed, so I close with this final comment....

:deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal: :deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal::deal:

and anyone having any further questions on the subject should refer to

I thought I was the only one to the right of Attilla the Hun, then I noticed you were from Texas :D:D:D

Until you have lived in England you have no concept of how bad Political Correctness can get, I hope to God the US does not get that bad

I think anyone who has ever tried to help a "newbie" who really only wanted the easiest possible way to free tv has felt some degree of frustration. Frustration which stems from us knowing that somewhere on this forum a simple search would return a few dozen threads which contain EXACTLY the information the poster is looking for. I have felt this, I have replied to a few........some of which I may have been a little short with, but not disrespectful.
I'm sure that some folks who really only want the easy way might say "to heck with it". Others who are truly interested might do some searching and come back later to ask questions.

I have NEVER felt as though I was treated badly or unfairly at any point on this forum. I think for the most part we embrace those who truly seek knowledge of legit FTA. In fact I think many members are here because they want to help, not because they need the info.
Inevitably with a group of members as large and diverse as we have here at Satellite Guys there will always be those who seek to bring everyone down. It is the job of the mods to make sure it does not get carried away.
Maybe I am missing something but as far as I can see, the mods do an excellent job of keeping things in line and for the most part, we all do a good job of making people feel welcome and try our best to provide the information that is asked for. There are always those who want hand holding every step and those who really do not take the advise given. These people are not easy to help yet we still try.

Point is, I think 99% of the time we do a very very good job. Considering that we all do this for free (heck some of us even pay to be here) and provide others the benefit of our knowledge and time for free.........did I mention we do it at no cost to the customer.....I think we do an exemplary job! Oh, and we do it for free too................:)

I see far more rudeness and snide remarks in the small dish areas here. Some people only post to push other people's buttons. Same complaints over and over and commiseration.

I only frequent the FTA, C band and 4DTV areas here for the most part. We all seem to get along here in our discussions sometimes disagreeing with our own unorthodox rigs and quest for knowledge. But we take it all in. We all try all sorts of things and speaking for myself, I enjoy learning the hard way. Others always have something to say.

What fun would it be if everyone knew everything and had the same opinion? The brainstorming is great.

Hey, if anyone kept up with the Blu-Ray/HD DVD Warzone section that was up during the Great HD Format Wars, you KNOW how heated things can get when emotional topics are discussed! :smug

I thought I was the only one to the right of Attilla the Hun,

Attila? Yeah, I've heard of that guy....bleedingheart liberal pantywaist socialist......lol
then I noticed you were from Texas
LOL. I dont suppose it would surprize you to hear that's not the first time I've heard that.....:hatsoff: With all due respect to geographic consideration, I feel old school values and principals are the root. That is more age/generation associated than anything else, which makes it a dieing concept worldwide. This New World Order does not impress me.
....but you are right, Texas would probably secede before being forced to change it's capital punishment stance.

Thanks for the nomination Pedro, but that job sucks! I dont know why anyone would want it, no real power or stroke. Now chairman of the FED, that's the guy with the huevos grande......lol

King would be good....King of the United States....I like it!
It's good to be the King!

I am certain I dont have any blue blood in my lineage, but I'm told I'm a royal pain in the a$$.....does that count?

I agree with Brian, there is no need to be rude.

My first post was greeted with "thats what we have a search for"

All other posts have been very helpful

Shalom

I Agree

Thanks Satellite AV for the thoughtful post. The general tone of certain threads on this site has changed.

Wow, don't be confused. Everyone..... don't stick your head in the sand and pretend that it doesn't happen ... regularly!

..... Who cares about a specific thread! Who cares about the member's past? Can we control what any member might do in the future? I am talking about our welcome and polite education. They are here interested in receiving free to air. Let's help them learn about receiving the free and unencrypted channels that we promote!

I agree. I don't think anyone should be defensive about your post. What's the harm in asking people to consider their reactions to newbies, and perhaps be nicer? Hardly a scandalous suggestion.

I'm not rude to newbies (so says me), but I do tend to ignore them. "Did you even search?" is a common reaction I have (AC3 comes to mind), but there are some newbie topics that can be nebulous to form into search terms unless you already know the answer.

If you don't have the patience required to be helpful, or you don't think they _deserve_ a positive non-rude-response because they're lazy, or you judge their motivations contrary to FTA spirit, then don't reply. Ignore them. That seems fair.
