It seems to me that the manufacturers of the FTA receivers could make their receivers "hack-proof". The only way the receivers get software updates would be from the factory itself.
And the updates should include improvements for their receivers and the latest updates on the satellites.
But most of the FTA receivers are from Korea.... And sell them worldwide...
No easy solutions....

It seems to me that the manufacturers of the FTA receivers could make their receivers "hack-proof". The only way the receivers get software updates would be from the factory itself.

The sad fact is that the receivers that can be modified to receive Dish and Bell programming for free are the ones that sell LOTS of boxes. There is really no incentive to make the box hack-proof.

I just do not believe this. now everybody is firing against hackers, what about the guy who started all this, he is not hacker he is a dish seller, business sense vs common sense, I guess not. Someone just mention the right way. an encryptation, it might be hard but my guess is that in the end they will use encrypt ration, similar to access points in banks, where the entrance key change everytime you log on or sweep the smart card, that came be anything from 4 to 8 hours everyday, so is pretty much difficult to get the key. I suggest to seller to send a request to the Dish company he represent to do that, no one will survive that, for sure. don't trust me, go ahead, call your bank and say you want to talk to security engeneering, you will be surprise!

Does anyone know what the capabilities of those ''other' receivers are? It seems that charlie does not want the expense of changing out all those receivers. Or could they use a newer protocol that maybe their current boxes already support? Just thinking out loud........................................El_Viejo

I'm new to this whole FTA thing. What's the difference between real FTA and the hackers? I talked to a guy today about buying a system that will allow me to get all the satellite channels for a one time fee. He said it's legal. How can I tell what is and what is not legal?

For a one time fee??? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!!!! El_Viejo

Is Neosat a legitimate FTA company? It was one of their receivers that the guy was trying to sell me.

Yes, Neosat is a company. But, beware, they came out with the Ipro 1000 and said it was the last receiver you would ever need. But, then they stopped supporting it. Now, they have the model 2000, which has also been replaced with a newer model. They originally were to provide an internet site that would automatically update your receiver. So how long until they stop support for the newer models? They used a system called IKS, internet key sharing, which may or may not be traceable back to your IP on the net. I have a Ipro 1000 and it does very good on trus FTA. Set up is not quite as simple as my Pansat 2500a, but once you get used to it, it sets up very well. Just make sure you understand what you might be letting yourself in for in the future. El_Viejo
