I tried to swap my SD/DVR box (newly installed yesterday) to RF remote. After 3 tries, it would not work. However, I easily changed my HD/DVR box (also newly installed yesterday) to RF remote using the same steps. This makes me wonder whether the SD/DVR box supports RF? Does anyone know? Thanks.

By the way, my HD box is hooked to a telephone line, but the SD box is not. Does that impact anything (RF or otherwise)?

Some receivers have internal RF antenna's other require an external RF antenna. Some remotes are RF and others are IR.

What model reciever do you have and what model remote are you trying to program?

I'm not yet totally familiar with the model numbers. Do these make any sense:

SD/DVR: R16NC-300
Remote: White--r16man080110.

Now found another number for remote RC64

I just spoke with DTV tech support and learned that the remote that came with my new box does not support RF. I ordered an RF remote from DTV for $25 which should arrive in 3 days and I should be in business. I wanted another remote anyway so this is fine.

You can tell a RF remote from a IR remote by the FCC sticker on the back, if you have RF remote for HDdvr it will control your R16 as well.

New Problem

My new RF remote arrived yesterday (1 day!). I set it up and it works great. I can control my system while watching it on my 2nd TV in the other room. The one problem is that my original IR remote doesn't seem to work completely any more. I was very clear with the nice lady at Directv that I wanted to be able to use both remotes for the same receiver. She said that would be absolutely no problem. I could have two remotes (one IR and one RF) working for the same receiver at the same time.

Am I doing something wrong or was she wrong? If so, very frustrating!

all you can do is ask. i don't see why not. by the way the remote with this model # RC64RB just in case you don't know the B means the buttons light up when you press them. this is especially useful in the bedroom when it's dark.

try switching the R16 back to IR through the menu, once its back in IR mode, do red button reset. now retry both IR & RF remotes.
this procedure works on R15's.

If it works, never turn on RF through the menu again.

Will do! I assume you mean to resetup the IR remote. I can do that. But, what is a "red button reset?" Thanks.

The same exact thing happened to me when I ordered my RF remote before I knew which remotes were RF. I was pissed, DirecTV would not send me another RF remote. I was even told the very same thing by customer service when placing my order. You can program 2 RF remotes to the same code but can't use an IR and RF at the same time.

I talked to a tech support rep, his supervisor, and retension. The best retension could offer was $5 off another new remote. So now after spending $25, I could get a second remote for $20. $45 for something I was told would work for only $25. I explained there customer service needs proper education so future customers don't get the wrong information.

I then found out that I had RF remotes all along. Oh well, I like the lighted keys for in the bedroom so I left the issue be and used my other RF remote with my new one.

Lesson learned, customer service doesn't know crap. If you want honest answers come here first then do your shoping. I will never call customer service again as most of them are making there $10 an hour not knowing there head from a watermellon.

So true, I love pulling to a customers house and there are notes on the work order to do this or that (custome work) for free... ie

Tech Notes: No charge for 8 Wall Phishes, Cust has 3 Story house
Tech Notes: Cust Req no holes to be drilled in home, No roof install and does not want a dish in his yard. (house is a new 2 story brick/stone house with a terracotta roof, customer did not even want me to drill a 1" hole into the wall to get cables into attic or crawl space house was not pre-wired. Ended up getting canceled.)

Or the escalated service calls

Tech Notes: Cust unable to view channels, all TS steps taken, bring extra channels. (problem was receiver was never activated, got lucky there as our warehouse was out of channels oO)
Tech Notes: All TS Steps taken, unable to resolve OOP Escalation, replace Dish. (problem was access card was upside down on a self install on a best buy rec.)

I figured it out and it worked!!! I changed it back to IR using the RF remote and then pushed the red button on the receiver and voila both remotes are now working!!!

Thank you so much! This forum has got to be the best in the internet.

Glad it worked, not having R16 myself I couldn't experiment.

This is good stuff for a late night lol. I've had the coolest installers in the area & I would never expect 'phishes' on any custom house. Some of my pulls took a half day to do properly.
