I have read a couple of threads and did not get the exact set up I have answered, so Here it goes.
  1. I have HR21 receiver.
  2. I have Linksys Wireless G Router hooked up to DSL. (No DSL modem - line comes straight in to router)
  3. I bought XE102 Power Line Home plug
  4. I hooked up according to XE102 instructions
  5. I get the 3 lights are on at each HomePlug location
  6. HR21 will not connect.
  7. On my PC connected to the router I installed software just to help trouble shoot. When I pull it up, "HomePlug Not Found" is the answer.
  8. What am I doing wrong? Help?

Maybe IP or porting issues? Try a hard wire approach to test the DVRs ability to connect to the Linksys device and gain access.

I assume that the Linksys is not just a router, but yet a modem gateway / router / wireless all-in-one unit; like maybe the #WCG200?

You can't just have a wireless router and get ISP access.

Another thing to try is to plug the XE102 directly into the PC's Ethernet port (instead of the router) and run the software. If it still doesn't see the HomePlug adapter, you may have gotten a bad unit.

Continued pain! :)

It is an all in one router.
DSL in from wall (no modem) to router. Then one line to PC for Internet Access. Wireless is then received to PC downstairs fine.
Hardwire would require unhooking all the cables from the DVR and bringing upstairs?? That would suck - I have analog out, Digital out, HDMI, phone, etc etc.
Also, would I not need to keep the SAT cables hooked up to it to test?

Hooking directly to PC? The software runs fine. It just tells me It doesn't see the wall plug. I will try a LAptop in the room. Maybe that will at least eliminate "power" run between upstairs and downstairs.

Does the router SSID & password have anything to do with it? I wouldn't think so, except for wireless.

I also tried Advance setup with IP address, Subnet, gateway, etc. on DVR. It appeared to see it, but then wouldn't connect.

Any other ideas to try????
Thanks for eveyone's input thus far!!

Which HomePlug adapter doesn't the software see? The one connected to the router or just the one upstairs connected to the HR21?

It would be difficult to do that, although a direct cable connection would help zero in on the problem.

A test with the laptop would help. I think the software will only see the adapter when connected directly to it. The SSID and password are only used for wireless and have no effect. There probably is a utility on the CD which came with the router to encrypt communications. If you use that, you need to do it on both adapters or there will be no connection. It really isn't necessary in most cases, since the powerline signal probably won't work from a neighboring house anyway.

I'm using the Directv powerline adapters and they worked right away, but the XE102 should do that also. The DVRs aren't the easiest things to configure for networking, as you have found out. A "connected to network" indication on the DVR isn't necessarily correct (it seems to only detect that there is a physical connection to the adapter).

Kuna,

If you want help, I suggest you provide a bit more information...

What is the model of the Linksys box.
Is one of the XE102's wired to the router?
How old is your home?
How far away is the second XE102 from the first? Are they on different floors?
Have you tried plugging a computer into the wired XE102 near the D* box to see if it can or cannot get an IP address and internet access?

When tried using a power line telephone adaptor, I had problems with it. The guy at the store said that there can be issues with older home wiring and two story homes too.

Thanks in advance everyone's help.
Berck I have:
Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G
One XE102 is from router to wall plug.
home is only 7 years old. I would think no "old school wiring"
Locations are on diff floors, but just one floor down.

I will try laptop in and out of room to see. I was going to last night but didn't have a chance. Maybe do my PC. Out of router, to wall, back to PC from diff wall and see.

The XE102 has no settings for password or anything like that as far as I can tell associated with the router, only with the device. Am I missing something?

The PC from router works fine. Wireless works fine.
I will keep trying. Get back with result. I am not a computer / network genious or anything, but I have a clue about such things and this is just frustrating. It is something VERY simple I am missing either in Router setup or DVR I bet. I don't think the XE102 is "bad". I'll find out tonight.

Again, thanks for everyone's input!!

The router (or computer) may not "see" the adapter. It operates as a bridge and doesn't get an IP address assigned. Don't worry about passwords, that is only for wireless connections. Connecting a laptop to the adapter in the other room is probably the best way to troubleshoot the connection. Try setting it up for an ethernet (not wireless) connection to your router. Once you have that working, connect it to the adapter in the other room. It should connect right away.

In addition to what Bob has said, make sure none of the XE102 are plugged into a UPS deivce. Plug them directly into the socket.

Or even into a powerstrip (which may have surge protection and filtering). Directv sells a powerstrip powerline adapter but it is higher speed than the XE102 (it is compatible with the XE103/104, however).

The 85Mbps adapters that DirecTV sells are compatable with the 14Mbps XE102. They will only communicate at the 14Mbps speed.

That's good to know. The data sheet doesn't provide much detail.

It says in the datasheet that it complies with HomePlug 1.0 (That's the 14Mbps standard). Chipmaker Intellon added some higher data rate modulation modes to get to 85Mbps. HomePlugAV 200Mbps devices on the other hand are not backwards compatible with the 85Mbps or 14Mbps devices.

I still have not done the Laptop in the same room test.
I will tonight and also try the "ethernet" connection setup as suggested.
It is weird though, I tried using advanced setup last night and put in the DSL IP addy and subnet and DNS etc and the DVR said "connected" and then began trying to connect to internet and it stopped and said unable to connect to the internet.
This implies, I emphasize implies that the XE102 adapter is connecting to the router and it is an interface issue between the router / DSL and HR21. Is this a bad assumption??
DSL can sometimes be a pain in the but in the past. One thing that is weird, when I got DSL (Ultra from Bellsouth) it asked me for which modem I had... but I have no DSL modem. They used the phone service run in to the main swiytch gear into the house and ran a line to wall jack and I plug my Linkys router via CAT5 directly into that.
That's what makes me think it is DSL to HR21 issue not the router or XE102, but laptop test will eliminate one or the other.

I will keep trying. I WANT ON DEMAND dang it!! :)

Okay.. Well Laptop worked fine in and out of the room.
I also tried straight from DSL with no router and it saw all the addresses but no internet. Put back into router and saw addresses, etc but still no internet access. It says connected, but does not get Internet to DVR.
I am going to call Direct TV and Have them come out. It is a DSL / DTV issue. Has to be in the advance settings.
Anyway, If I ever get it resolved, I will let everyone know.
Y'all be good!!

FYI, when you first connect the DVR to the Internet, it might take a few days before you get VOD access.

Netgear has a utility to setup security on the adapters that you can download, it allows you see any and all adapters that are plugged in. If you are able to see both then the issue is not with the adapters. If you do not see the remote adapter, then try bringing it to same room as the router and connect it there. If the issue is only at the remote location try using another outlet near where you want the connection.

FWIW: I just plugged in my Netgear Wireless router which gets feed from Bellsouth DSL directly into my HR21-100, rebooted the dvr, waited about 30 minutes, selected a show that had just started (letterman) via the Directv website from my desk top pc, looked across the room and a few seconds later, the red record light went on, I did not even do anything for my wireless security (I have TKIP) works great, :)
YMMV, mine was too simple :) :)
