I have been using this old system to receive wild feed basketball games, but those are getting harder and harder to find. Is there anything I can do to revitalize this old dog?

8 foot mesh dish (Maybe Chapparal)
C band only
General Insturments 4dtv receiver
New actuator

TIA

welcome :wave

you have a pretty decent system there. What I would recommend is getting a FTA receiver and adding that to the 4DTV...Lots of stuff on C-band that is in the clear...check out thelist above

I have a 6 foot C-Band dish in Minnesota and it works for most of the channels out there

A High-Def DVB Satellite receiver is necessary for Sports Feeds.
Something like a Coolsat 8000 or 8100, it can be connected to your current system with a few Wires, Splitters, and a Switch - call a "Slave Kit"

There is plenty on Ku too, may think about adding that.

Anybody want to trade?

I have a SONY PX-11 LCD projector with remote, manual, component RCA and carrying case I would trade for good HD FTA receiver and what ever else I might need. This projector will handle HD input. Let me know....

it will help bring in some stronger signals and maybe a couple extra ones over the 6 footer ;)

You need a FTA receiver that can do HD and DVB S-2 8PSK since more and more feeds are going to this digital format.

I use pansat 9200 HD receivers with 8psk pansat optional tuner board. Beware that there are tuner boards out there for pansats that do not receive fta 8psk signals. The other boards are hack boards and you they don't work. they are sometimes called Illuminatti boards, ninja V3 boards, and whatever else.

Stick to the real authentic Pansat board if you get this setup. i am very happy with mine. It has some bugs but works pretty well.

Your 8' dish is great. Add KU band and you will pick up a lot of stuff too.
Your 4dtv still works I assume.

You will enjoy FTA.

Okay, I'm jumpin' in, just ordered a NEW Viewsat Ultra receiver, is there anything else I might need to get started.?

TIA

You should read reviews before purchasing anything, that is one recomendation, the Viewsat receivers are not that great at all.

tdti1,

I did read the review on GOsatellite.com, they rate the Viewsat ultra as the best SD reciever buy. What one would you suggest?

Thanks,

hoops

I hate to say it but some satellite sites rank almost every receiver they sell as "best one to buy"

I've had a Viewsat before and didnt like it because it catered more to the "people who want to steal satellite service" group.

I love my Coolsat 5000 but they dont really make that anymore (you could get a 5000 or 6000 on Ebay)....for HD either the Coolsat 8000/8100 or Pansat 9200. Fortec makes some good receivers for SD programming.

Check out the review area here. There have been a bunch of receivers checked out by us folks so we're pretty honest if something is good or if its bunk.

Hoops;

Recievers are like a womans shoes, you can't have too many. You can always use it for a dedicated fixed dish setup if you make the plunge to HD, or use it to get a pal into FTA.

OK looks like I'm stuck with the Viewsat Ultra

I'm need to try and make the best of this receiver.

I have a single LNB, C band. The LNB feed goes to the high frequency splitter. This in turn goes to the LNB in on both my 4DTV receiver and the new Viewsat. The TV out from the Viewsat goes to the TV. Is this all correct? Does the 4DTV still control the dish? Does anybody have any setup tips?

I have my dish pointed at my south bird (galaxy3C). Is this a good place to start and what can I expect to see from Galaxy 3C?

I appreciate all the help you guys can provide.

Yes I have the receiver and yes the 4DTV receiver is working.

I have a 4 way splitter that passes power to all ports. 5-2050 MHz. Will this splitter work?

No, you want a HiFreq Splitter that has power Pass on only one port. Otherwise both receivers will be sending voltage to the LNB.
Until you get the correct splitter, you can directly connect to the Viewsat, and drive the BUD with the 4DTV. When done with the Viewsat, just switch the cable back to the 4DTV.
Make sure you power off the Boxes before connecting / disconnecting any cables.
