I was given a viewsat extreme by a friend who gave up hacking. It had hacked software on it and I found factory software (on a hacking site no less - google directed me there). Have been trying to get rtv on a 33" dish without any success. I thought I hit something yesterday afternoon and did a blind scan. The receiver does not have amc9 in its list.

2 questions:
1) after the blind scan, I picked up a raw feed of golf called "Coastal 5.5". Does anyone know what satellite it is on? I don't want to move the dish again until I know which way to move it.

2) How easy is it to add amc9 information to this receiver?

Thanks for any help to someone who is very green...

I would like to put up another dish for PBS also, if my wife lets me go to 4 dishes (2 for DIshNet)

Don't recognize the wild feed name, but sometimes they may only be up for a few minutes then disappear. Can you perform another blind scan and tell us what you are receiving this morning?

I did another blind scan this morning and...

found nothing again! I will try to get more information this afternoon - I think it was Pebble Beach. It had no announcers but did have background audio. Unfortunately, I had to go grocery shopping with my wife and kids and when we came back last night it was off the air.

Thanks for the help so far. I am determined to get this to work after much frustration. Must be close. I know the mast is plumb and the dish is set for 40 degrees and lnb is offset 4 left.

I know nothing of Viewsats and what it would take to add AMC9 to your sat list, but if you have a fixed dish (not motorized) I wouldn't even worry about it at this point.

Your receiver doesn't know (or care) what satellite shows in the menu, it just needs the proper transponder info (Frequency, Symbol Rate, Polarity, etc.) to be entered, if you live hit a transponder on ANY satellite, it will lock that signal, no matter what satellite is showing in your menu.

As SatAv said, try to scan in a signal and let us know all the transponder info on what you find, then we can determine what you are pointed at. Once you get past that hurdle it's all downhill from there! ;)

I saw that Coastal 5.5 thing a day or two ago, but sorry, I already deleted it, don't recall what satellite it was on. Try scanning several times today, you may find something you can post for us to check. Friday was not a good day to find AMC9-we had snow in the southeast, I lost RTV signal several times. Their uplink hasn't been the strongest and it's in Chattanooga, I'm sure the snow was affecting their power level. This morning it is good. If you find nothing, you can rotate the dish on the pole a tiny amount, about the width of a pencil mark, and possibly lock into the next satellite east or west. But be sure to make a mark on the pole before you move it, to find your starting point again. The manual for your receiver may still be at viewsatusa.com..

That IIRC was on 91W if it was Golf

The problem with 83W is there isnt much around it. 85W usually has only the test card and 79W is 4 degrees away. You could put in a strong transponder manually then move the dish

a strong transponder is 12140 V 30000. Its a data transponder and wont show any channels but will allow you to log the satellite. Shows very strong here in MN

Okay I just scanned again...

and I got a test pattern with Echostar on the top and some phone numbers. The channel number is amc5-521. I get no other channels - Lyngsat mentions some Mexican ones of this satellite. Golf does not start until 1pm EST.

Is this infact AMC5 at 85 degrees? If so I need move it back south slightly and up a bit.

Thanks
Steve

yes that would be 85W...its the only live transponder on right now

Steve,

You certainly aren't a newbie to the SatelliteGuys forum, you have been here since 2005! Were you a DN or a DirecTV person up til now and just wanted to try FTA? FTA is good! :)

I would not recommend trying to figure out where you are aiming your dish at from a feed channel result. That is just too sporadic and difficult to identify.

I take it that your dish is a non-motorized "fixed point" dish. Is this correct?

I would first try to dial your dish in to get a stronger satellite, just for mere experience in tuning the dish, before you try for 83W AMC 9. Try for a channel on 97W (for instance) where you know you are going to detect a broadcast at all times and the signal will be pretty strong. I picked 97W because it should be fairly centrally located for everyone to receive a signal from.

If you can capture the signal from 97W, then you can play with your "new" receiver in regards to adding and editing TPs and sats and channels and basically get accustomed to the Viewsat before you try to get 83W (AMC 9).

The signal from TP 11735 on AMC 9 (the RTN TP) has been troublesome for many to find or to retain a good signal lock from. So I would try something more reliable to grow familiar with your new receiver before you jump on AMC 9.

This might help you in the long run.

If the OP is that close (he's on 85W)......why would he go to 97W to lock something in?

We know he's close and I posted the data TP that is hot (12140 V 30000) so all he has to do is dial that in then fine tune RTN. And RTV/RTN is much stronger than say 3 months ago :)

Thanks for all of your replies!!!

You guys sure are a tight knit community.

One last question after looking at the list. Amc 5 is a 79 degrees and amc 16 is at 85.

Am I at 79 degrees now, not 85? I made a mistake in an earlier post.

Also, in answer to the question - yes I have been with DishNet since the begining. I bought a model 3000 receiver for $200 and had to prepay a year of service for around $200 I think. Times have changed.

Thanks again - this is a great site because of the people here.

Awesome!

Thanks Ice, I will try that Hughsnet transponder in a bit. Hopefully our daughter will have a nap soon (wifes working again) and I can get out there again.

Let you know how it works out.

Steve

I just scanned 79W and only logged 2 channels

11900 H 2170 KTEL
11937 H which is a feed...logs as "NETRUCK"

If, as Iceberg says, you are on 85W, then you are only one degree off. It might be a good idea to peak the elevation of your dish before you leave the signal that you are now on; then you shouldn't need to change the elevation on your dish and just nudge it a bit to the left (if you're standing behind the dish). But before you nudge, make sure that your receiver is set to the satellite and transponder that you are looking for. The RTV signal is strong today.

OMG I got it!!!

After a couple of months of frustration I am getting RTN E/W!!

I just nudged it a little to the south.

Wierd things though:
1) Ice - I entered the info for 12140 and the signal meter showed no quality
2) I decided to do a blind scan before giving up and it found RTV on 11584/4440 not the listed frequency/symbol rate

Anyways, it's working thanks to all of your help. I have a quality of about 50 which I am not sure is good for my area (SW Ontario). I will peek it when the temp gets above freezing again.

Another thing the hacking software did not allow for is blind scanning. I am glad I switched it. Not telling the guy who gave it to me that it has been put to good (legal) use.

Thanks again:D
Next is 125 for PBS...if the wife does not want another dish, maybe a motor.

Steve

Your LNB frequency is off. Change it to SINGLE or STANDARD and 10750 LNB LO/LNB Freq. You have it set up for a Universal which is 10600. That is why RTV frequency is off by 150Mhz (well 151 ;) )

If you enter 12090 for the data TP right now I bet it logs in ;)

Ice,

I was distracted while compiling my post, so I actually missed the posts where Steve discovered which sat he was on. I posted and observed that after the fact.

I just let it go, rather than editing it as I thought it was fair advice for others to read. The concept was right, the timing here was just too late.
