I've been a directv customer for 5+ years, can't remember exactly when. I have 4 old RCA receivers. If I upgrade one of the receivers to a HR23 how will my account be affected? Will I be locked in to a 2 year contract? How much more in fees/taxes will I have to pay on top of the HD package?

Adding any HD DVR requires a 2 year commitment.

To add to what Jason posted, IF your just adding another recvr, not swapping it out for another , it will add $ 5 to your bill.
If you replace one with the new recvr, it won't go up at all.
Fwiw, go with the H24/HR24, don't even thing about the HR23.

Can we exchange a current HD box for an HR24 if there's nothing wrong with our current box, just to receive the HR24 features upgrade?

I suppose you could ask, the other option would be to order one from someone other than D* this way you KNOW what your getting ..... as many have.
Yes, it reactivates the 2 year commitment.
The commitment bothers some, while not others.
I'm on the doesn't bother side as I'm not going anywhere and have had good luck for the majority of the time I've been here, others don't like to be in a commitment.
I feel you should not need a commitment after X amount of years with the company, but thats room for another thread.

I'll have to do some thinking.....I like what I've read about the HR24 features and improvements. The 2-yr thing isn't a big issue with me but I agree with you; it would be nice to see some kind of "long-standing DTV customer recognition" change in the automatic commitment reset clock. Say, for x-yr and longer DTV subs with good standing, they waive the rule.
I also don't see myself changing providers anytime soon (sports, ST lock for several more years) so I might join the HR24 club soon.

Well, not yet....
, there's one "catch" and since I'm not a DTV expert like you guys, I don't know how to do this....I have several movies residing in my HR23 box (all HD) that I don't want to lose when/if I make the switch to the HR24.
I've read a few posts on this Bd that seem to indicate that it's possible to transfer stored HD movies from an existing box onto an external hard drive?, or, this would be my preferred choice, to transfer them onto my new HR24 box. I'm guessing that the 2nd option isn't possible due to some kind of "box-specific" encoding or something?
I don't own a standalone DVD Recorder so I'm guessing that I'd have to buy one before I could record my HR23 stored HD movies onto some DVD-R's.
If I go this route, will my stored HD movies be recorded in their originally-recorded aspect ratio's via the component-output from the HR23? All of my HR23 recorded movies are anamorphic format.
Also, are these recorded movies "record-protected" in any way?
I just wanted to add my two cents... I switched over to DirecTV just about a month ago, and they installed HR 23 receivers... I couldn't stand the delay when going through the menu guide, so I bought two new HR 24's... it's like night and day... don't even think about getting 23's...

Sounds like you have everything figured out correctly, there is no way to transfer from the HR23 to the 24.
There are options to move to a PC, but it requires buying other equipment.
Are they shows you want to KEEP or just watch ?
If it's just watch, order your HR24 and have it set up so you can use it, and KEEP the HR23 till after your done watching the movies/shows, it only adds $ 5 to your bill and you can deactivate the HR23 when your done.
Thats the easiest way of doing it .... seeing you don't have a DVR recorder (stand alone).
If you want to KEEP these movies, it would probably be cheaper in the long run to go out and BUY the movies that buy the stuff to upgrade your computer to be able to transfer.

All receivers are tied to a commitment no matter what type they are. Some like the D12 have a smaller commitement but any HD or DVR has 24 month commitment.

You do understand that if you use a DVD recorder that you will lose the HD aspect of the movies. Instead of buying a DVD recorder you could get this and do the same to your PC.

You then would be able to stream the movie to your HD DVR from you PC anytime you wanted to watch it.

You can not record over component to a DVD recorder. Either composite or S-Video and the recording will be in SD. Anamorphic? depends on the recorder.

It sounds like the streaming idea is the way to go for me.
another thing you can do is a smart search to see how many of these recording you can find to record again. thats what i did with the recordings i had on my hr21 that had been sitting there for about 6 months. i found most of them again through smart search. they are now scheduled to record again on my hr24. some of them are on another channel but still in HD which is what i care about.
that smart search feature from directv works great. and i love how detailed the info on each program has become. pictures of the cast and crew. DOB and even DOD.

I didn't see it mentioned, but are any of his current receivers also DVRs? If not, he'll also have the DVR fee added to the account.
