Team Summit: General Assembly Thoughts and Pics

I just got done looking at the xip813 again and I looked for a OTA tuner. I did not see anything. It surprises me that they wouldn't do that. I was going to post a pic but I see Scott already has some of the back of the receiver.

I did see the sling extenders but was unable to find any info about it.

If they've written off OTA, it will be a show stopper for several of us.

Yes, it sure doesn't look like there are any provisions for OTA tuners which will disappoint those used to that feature. They may be looking at disappointing those subs to keep production costs down and simplify things figuring most get their locals via satellite. I really don't care as I have HTPCs with ATSC tuners all over the place connected over a Cat 6 network for shared OTA and media server content. If I were running Dish, I'd opt for simple over comprehensive since it'll satisfy the most at the lowest cost.

What concerns me is unlike multiple receivers if the xip813 crashes you have no tv till they get a new one out to you.
I would have preferred software on the receivers in place of the thin client approach

I didn't realize how important ota was until the tornadoes that came through our area last week. As we were watching our local news (on sat) very closely and the path of tornadoes we lost signal completely when we needed it the most. Fortunately ota was up & running fine & the 1 tornado we were worried about the most came within 5 miles of us. We would have not known otherwise if it were not for ota.
Ota should always be considered when unveiling a new technology, at the very least from a public safety point of view.

I'd hate to have to go back to an HTPC. I did that in the early HDTV days and just watched on my PC monitor. Today, I'd have to buy ANOTHER PC and install it next to my main TV, rig it with my Onyko and program the ole' Harmony to yet another configuration. And then listen to my wife and MiL ask why it can't just be simple.

Not a thrilling prospect. My ViP722s may be with me a long time. Or there's always Fios. They have a LOT more local channels than Dish.

I was planning on ordering one in the next couple of weeks. We're going to visit the in laws on Nantucket at the end of June. There is only 1 tv in the house and if there is a Red Sox game on, my fil will be watching that. With the sling I can use my laptop to watch something else. I'll now wait till after the 18th.

How can you survive with a room full of Red Sox Fans???? Then on top of it, they may the Bruins playing for the Stanley Cup by then......I would just stay home....and let the rest of the family go!!!!:D

Wasn't the whole idea of having the OTA option to enable customers who weren't in areas that they had HD locals, or I guess any locals at all, a way for people to get them? Not only are the OTA channels better quality, but DISH doesn't transmit all the sub-channels either. Granted some of the sub-channels are just SD feeds of the HD channel, but some like the ABC and CBS affiliates in my area, broadcast the CW and MyNetwork channels. Idk. Yea, I'll miss it, but at the same time I want MRV.

It will use a USB OTA Tuner. You can plug it in to any of your XiP boxes and it will be automatically shared on your network.

Additionally, my OTA gives be significantly viewed from TWO DMAs. I could not go to a solution that did not integrate this capability.

Smart move, I don't blame you.

That's good to hear. Without it, it would be a no go for me. I kept my 1000 and 2000 receivers till I got my 722 just because they had ota tuners.

It would be a no go for me without the OTA tuners as well. I get the OTA locals from my market with great signal strength, so I "moved" to an adjacent market so I could have "significantly viewed."

Can you connect more than one? It would help to have at least two OTA tuners, but I could use three.

For XiP questions please see the XiP Questions thread.

I wont be able to answer all the questions, but I will try my best!

It would be nice if we didn't have three different threads going with the same questions and answers, or maybe an answer that is only in one thread.

Maybe just one Team Summit thread?
