DISH / Blockbuster Announcement Discussion Thread!

How about a closed thread sticky with all details? Just got in & it sure would be easier than going through all the 180+ replies.

This sounds all too good to be true. It'd include video games too! My only fear is that the TV selection won't be as good on BB than Netflix. I guess I'll be finding out quickly. That they are streaming through the Dish box was a great idea.

Does this mean Netflix is now a target for acquisition by a TV provider?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I do not currently do any streaming. What is the quality of the stream...1080i 5.1... or less? Thanks!
I'd guess "less". If it is like Netflix, it is pretty good on an HD tv.

DTV's attorneys are probably in a conference call with RexBox or Netflix. LOL

Actually, that's not what the slide said. I just rechecked the video to make sure. What it does say is...

"More than 20 Premium Channels"

I agree that the difference is obscure, but there is a difference. Now, did Dish use that terminology knowing that many would see "Premium Movie Channels"... I don't know. But the slide didn't say "more than 20 PREMIUM movie channels".

Cheers

The press release says

Watch it! – More than 20 premium entertainment movie channels from studios like MGM, Epix, Sony Movie Channel, PixL and more.

Probably a typo, it should have said More than 20 premium entertainment & movie channels from studios

$10 a month isn't a valid comparison...my rokus dont cost anythong per month, but to use this service on my two tvs not hooked to dish dvrs, id be hit for $ 50 per month...and they most likely wouldnt even let me lease two more.

Wow, I was thinking of re-adding Platinum to my plan since I dropped it last year, so this is another reason to bring it back if they offer streaming of Blockbuster movies. We do have Netflix as well, but if BB streaming has the same type of content, mainly kids shows for the little ones, I would definitely consider dropping Netflix.

As for going to a physical Blockbuster, we have one in town but it's WAY across town and I hear not going to be around much longer. We used to do the subscription service through Blockbuster a few years ago which was nice, but the one we used near the house shut down last year.

So another 'wait and see' kinda thing I guess.

This is a lame attempt if it's designed to rival Netflix. The biggest threat to Netflix is Netflix itself.
You may not have noticed, but Dish is in major competition with Cable and Sat providers, not Netflix. This is designed to give people another reason to choose Dish over Directv, Comcast, Time Warner, etc...

Actually, if you watched the press release you would have heard the CEO state, Netflix is great for movies, Hulu is great for TV shows. Dish will be the best of both! In other words, they are in competition with all other satellite, cable, DVD rental and streaming businesses. Dish wants Dish to be your one stop shop for all your media needs.

I like the strategy. This gives them a chance to get some revenue for Blockbuster and essentially Beta test the re-launched streaming service. Hopefully they will use the money to improve the streaming offerings over time and not line the executive's pockets. Netflix's success, thus far, has been driven by increasing the streaming content. Dish/Blockbuster would do well to follow that path.

I thought the reason Netflix agreed to the 28 day wait on new releases was so the studios would agree to give them more titles from their libraries for streaming. Apparently it worked as Netflix has 15,000 and BB only 3,000.

DISH Network - DISH NETWORK INTRODUCES BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE PASS, FEATURING FIRST SUBSCRIPTION STREAMING MOVIE SERVICE

We weren't talking about the press release, we were talking about the slide in the streamed announcement.

If you wanna see what we were talking about, the announcement is still up on the home page. It's about 10 minutes & 26 seconds in.

Cheers

I'm a bit behind and wasn't hooked up to the network with the receiver, so I don't know whether the streaming Platinum has been around. Is the BB streaming available already too?

Well, I liked what I've read so far...I anxious for all the details. I'm signed up with BB right now under the 2 disc plan, and I have the Platinum plan from Dish also. I just need to know the how & when for dropping my BB plan and getting the new Dish/BB pass. If I'm reading these post correctly, I should only half to pony up $5.00 more to Dish, thus saving me about $11.00/month.:D

I read this over at Slashdot regarding the announcement:

"Moreover, the streaming component seems to be a largely rebranded version of Dish’s existing video-on-demand offering. "

So streaming is limited to what the VOD channels are on Dish? If so Im assuming the VOD is now free for whatever movie you want (i.e. not $3.99 per movie or whatever it is). If the plan also includes Rentals (especially Bluray) than I might jump on it. But the streaming Im still confused about. If its just limited to what Dish already has on VOD I'm not impressed with that aspect. There needs to be a single post or page or something that explains everything the plan has and whats needed.

If I have been reading right VOD and "streaming" are delivered differently
