This to me is a huge disappointment. I went "all in" with the promise of full integration. 6 tuners all seen as one unit. Huge blow.

They are not done yet, this is just the beginning. :)

Which is why I said a 6 tuner hopper with an ota module similar to the 722k /922k would of been the way to go. Then you could had up 5 joeys and in 6 rooms watch tv. The lack of real integration and a real dual tuner ota module will kill the hopper for me. Of course in a couple of years they might just release a true 6 tuner hopper that has ota module and then I might look into it. Till then I'll stay with my 722k and two 211ks.

That would be nice for you and a bunch of us here at SatelliteGuys. We are not your normal customer.

I was told that less the 2% of the installed hopper base has two hoppers. I am sure that number will climb over time.

wow, i didn't realize it would be that wide. I would have guessed at least 25% went 2 hoppers.

I though it would be about 25% percent as well. Keep in mind though when you call for example in my case a Two Hopper/One Joey set up, you really had to plead your case for that set up, I am happy that I have that set up :)

I am sure that number will grow, when I first got my Hopper I only had one, but I added a second one a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier.

Same here. They kept telling me I didn't need two. I had a 922 and two 722's. I don't know why they would equate that to one hopper and three joeys.

I am happy they allowed me to do this so i could move from Direct to Dish, I have to say my reasons were from information I had on the satellite guys website :)

I Informed them I was concerned if one hopper went out I would lose all tv and while I would not see conflicts a lot on three tuners with three tv's I wanted to avoid it.

Plus if you see there commercials I see them pushing the Hopper/joeys as watching recorded shows/movies in other rooms not live tv. Love the service and thanks again Scott for the Team Summitt info!

I would guess we're also missing the other number that goes with it. How many of the hopper installs are new customers vs existing customers?

For new customers, it costs $199 for that second hopper so that's also a huge deterrent.

Still, 2% is a shockingly low number. Just reading this forum, you'd think there was more than that.

$199 is not a huge price though. I think it's a very fair price for what you get.

How much sis a two terabyte hard drive today? If you just think about that itself it makes it worth it.

That's how I looked at it. Plus as a new customer it was best to get the second hopper at install and not pay a higher price down the road. And the 199 was worth it for piece of mind with no conflicts at all!

That may be true but the average consumer wants free free free!

HD prices are moving back to normal now, but the box does cost Dish some money.

But, I think the people on this board overestimate how many TVs people have in their houses. Average American Home Now Has Three TVs - BusinessWeek

The average American home now has 2.86 televisions and just 2.5 people, according to a new survey by Nielsen. The number of TVs jumped from 1.57 in 1975 to 2.43 in 2000 as the Internet gained popularity. The number of units per home continued to grow through the 2000s, but more slowly.

Three Tuners, 2.86 TVs on average, looks like 1 hopper covers most homes.

TV enthusiasts flock to boards like this one because they have a passion for TV and want the latest and greatest. Most TV watchers are not nearly so passionate.

Scott why do you bring up two terabyte? The user only gets one terabyte since dish uses the second terabyte for VOD etc.

Is prime time anytime used on the reserved portion of the hard drive or is it part of the one terabyte the user has available?

Simple: each box has a 2TB drive in it, so when talking about the cost of production you have to use 2TB price points, not 1TB price points.

PTAT uses part of the Dish portion of the HD, not the user portion.

I am trying to show that the cost of adding a second Hopper is quite reasonable. Just think about what a 2 terabyte drive costs. I think its quite a bargain for what you are getting. :)

Yeah I know everyone wants everything FREE FREE FREE these days, but like you and I we don't work or make stuff for free. So again I think $199 for a second Hopper is incredibly fair!

I agree, two hoper set up with what the Hopper can do, don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I think for 199 the hopper set up is a fair price!

My only mention of the $199 is that it would make a lot of new customers think twice about getting a second one as its' a lot of money.

Everyone's going to have a different perspective on "fairness" due to the leased issue. Just have to do what's right for you and decide whether that value is there for your household.

Well considering that these boxes cost upwards of $449 a piece to own, $199 for a second Hopper is pretty fair, even if it is leased... Then there's the Joeys for $149 a piece. I think that $199 was pretty fair for my 2H/2J setup. PS3 has gotten cheaper because it is using 5 year old technology... My PS3 when I got it on launch day was $600!

I have an announcement to make.

I've decided to get back into programming and go into the Smiley business. I'll modify that beating a dead horse to be more specific. One version will be overlaid with "upfront lease costs" - another, "HD RSNs" and so on.

And then there'll be my favorite: The "tossing out of raw meat" smiley. ;) ;) ;)

What would be more ideal is a $199 fee to get an upgrade to a single box hopper with 6 tuners that supports 6 joeys.... I think I am sensing the next CES hopper 2.0 demo box which should come out end of 2013 to early 2014 on Dish's usual new box schedule...

With less than 2% having a second Hopper, I just don't see the business case for it anymore.
