3D in 2012 -- May send me to DirecTv

Tampa8- The cost of the 3D PPV is at a premium and the cost of disks is also high compared to 2D. Yet, some people still pay the premium to get 3D. If a business really wanted to promote 3D, they should price it no higher than 2D. Of course, I also feel the PPV prices are outrageous on Dish Network and therefore I will avoi8d paying those prices when given other lower priced options.

"The best 3D picture is not as good as the best 2D picture if you are at all picky." Recently I started to watch John Carter in the 2D version, after 10 minutes I shut it down and put in the 3D. Since, I have watched that movie 4 times in 3D. Guess I am really picky when I know there are more entertaining options. :)

This is what I have been saying!

Also for movie theaters you should be able to keep the glasses and not have to pay for new glasses every time you see a 3D movie. So go to a 3D movie and use your own glasses or pay the $5 more and you get a pair you can keep. The price of the movie should be the same.

But I note you don't disagree 2D picture is better, and that was my point. Aside from special effects, I could ask why after 10 minutes you even turned that movie back on, but that's another thread. :)

If there is a 3D version, I'm watching it over any 2D version of anything just as I wouldn't think of watching a movie without at least 5.1 sound.

I prefer 2 D over 3 D almost every time. 3d just isn't very good most of the time. Not only does 2D cost less but it's usually better quality picture IMO.

That article is blocked for me, the traliers I saw for Brave looked very good (3D) ... most of the media "stack" stats against 3D as they please...

Here: (copied)

Pixar built Hollywood's most consistent animation shop by balancing interest from families and adults. But that brand strength doesn't always translate to 3D success: Last weekend, "Brave" yielded a 3D share of only 34% for its domestic B.O. tally -- a new low for stereo toons.

That result can only stoke Hollywood's concerns about the format's place in animation, once seen as the vanguard of the 3D revival. While the gap between 3D toons and their live-action counterparts widens and execs seek to understand why foreign auds spark to the format more than Americans, they're faced with a more ominous question: Are animated 3D films becoming an exception, or signaling a deepening domestic erosion?

It's no secret that 3D shares have slowly declined for both family and fanboy fare. Recent toons by DreamWorks Animation and Sony Pictures Animation have outpaced Pixar in domestic opening 3D shares. DWA's most recent offering, "Madagascar 3," saw 45% of grosses from the premium format, but by comparison, the studio's "How to Train Your Dragon" in 2010 commanded 67% of its B.O. from 3D -- the highest for any toon since 3D began making its comeback.

Pixar has trailed its animated competition going back to its first 3D release, "Up," which grossed 53% of its opening from 3D in 2009 (that same year, "Monsters vs. Aliens," from Paramount-DWA, debuted domestically with a 58% 3D share; Sony's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" rang up 60%).

The highest grossing movies this year are all in 3D. We who have Dish will get the 2D version while every other system, U-Verse, Fios, Directv, and many cable carriers will get the 3D version. For those of us who enjoy 3D, it is just another dissappointment with Dish. It won't kill us. We have lived with no local HD, thus making the hopper technology without OTA a non option. It would be much nicer to have all we want. I am thankful to have a great 3D tv, a 3D BluRay player, and enough funds to be able to buy 3D BluRay discs and enough friends who buy 3D BluRay discs to swap with. Dish is losing all this PPV revenue. It is just another of their poor business decisions.

:facepalm

Most people that watch a 3D movie on a 3D TV at least think it's OK. Some love it and some hate it but most give it at least a luke warm thumbs up. Almost all mid to high end bigger screen TV's are now 3D. The new OLED sets coming this Fall from Samsung and LG will be 100% 3D. From the folks I've talked to, they will buy one or two 3D movies to check out the technology. Right now the animated 3D movies are the better choice. Hugo seems to be one of the better non animated 3D movies. It's a shame 3D DVD's are so expensive and in the real world we live in it will take a total commitment from the major studios (NBC,CBS,ABC,FOX, Disney/ESPN) to make 3D a serious consideration for the average viewer.

It's just like HD was in the beginning. Until enough channels make it a full part of their main channel it will never take off.

Just got off phone from Dish Network tech support for 722K reliability issues. I happened to bring up the lack of 3D programming on VOD ch 501 and Ch 1 since March 2012. The tech stated to me: " I remembered a recent Dish memo that states Dish will not be pursuing 3D in the coming future".
Wow was I surprised to hear this. Looks like DirectTV for me shortly. I can only hope he was somehow wrong.

This is not new. Agree or disagree, Dish has taken the stance they are not going pay for broadcast 3D, at least not until there is more of a market. Whether that is a good or bad business decision has been debated to death. Obviously Dish considers it better for the bottom line right now and thinks there are better uses of their programming dollars and transponder space.

considering that DirecTV is basically killing off their 3D, it seems like a smart decision.
Hyperbole much? As others have correctly pointed out, when the above incorrect statement has been posted elsewhere, DirecTV has merely changed ONE full-time 3D channel to a part-time 3D event channel. Their other 3D offerings remain the same, which remains head and shoulders above Dish's.
