Rutgers coach Mike Rice abusing players

Looks like someone got fired. Social pressure wins again.

Cheers, K
Common sense, and unfortunately, probably more of a factor was his mediocre record. Maybe if his 'coaching style' produced a successful program, the issue wouldn't have seen the light of day??

They should give him back the money they fined him before then since this is why they fined and suspended him earlier. This is not new footage, its just footage that finally made it public.

How many folks here have actually played competitive sports in HS or College?

Am obvioulsy too old school on this. My hockey coach use to yell, bitch and throw water bottles, garbage cans, sticks and pucks... HS Bball coach would almost have a heart attack at every practice. The 'worse' "abuse" Ive seen is getting grabbed by the arm and told to wake up while running set plays. To me, there were coaches acting as coaches.

Please note the above were in competitive leagues and not pee-wee baseball. No one should yell at a group of 10 year old.

"And what exactly is that teaching?" ---> Accountability

Cheers, K

I didn't play college sports but I did play Football in high school and I played in baseball and basketball leagues from a very young age through varsity in high school.

Again I have to disagree with you. A grown man using hate speech while grabbing, pushing, and throwing basketballs at college kids does not teach accountability. It shows a lack of maturity on his part that I would rather not be passed down to future generations.

If you want to teach accountability get on someone for blowing his assignment and yell all you want or make them run suicides or whatever. When someone's first response to a blown play is to call him a homophobic name and then throw a basketball at his head he shouldn't be a coach.

you can run into a pick and really suffer in the game. it's just too dangerous we should not let things like this happen to the Children. did you see the boys leg break this is a terrible sport all games canceled.

head shots with a ball is over the top these days with concussion info coming in.
the report on young female soccer players was shocking.

Speaking from being hit several times by a bball at the back of the head.. it doesnt hurt (unless you happen to have your tongue between your teeth at the time). Come on its a rubber ball filled w/ air. Hit in the face...yeah that stings like a mother.. but not the back.

This probably happens 100 times a day : some kid throwing a basketball across the court, rebounds off the backboard then hits someone else in the head ..big deal...

Apparently the AD did show up. He does have many other sports to run, he can't be a babysitter.
why take up for him ? not doing his job imo
he's a boss
ever have one they don't call and tell you they are coming in the real world. unless..........he knows he does not want to be seen with you doing what you do.illegal, labor laws etc

That's why you have to wonder if the AD will be next. He only suspended Rice based on this footage, apparently hoping to sweep the whole mess under the rug...

I just now read the initial posted article.... I remember a segment on this late last year on ESPN. Rice, at the time, was battling some personal issues, including alcohol abuse. After his suspension, he went into some sort of therapy/counselling soon after.

You're right, successful program and all is forgiven. Fact he had a mediocre record means he was expendable. Do you think Tim Rizzo or Coack K would get fired over this? Not a chance..

Up next is the AD. That former employee who leaked this video has definetely burned his bridges.

AFAIK, this was an internal matter which was dealt with. Months later social pressure gets involved and everyone involved gets fired.
Welcome to the information age.

Concussions
we learn more everyday. we have always said "watch your head" forever .
if i was the AD and seen it would have told him no head shots but that's all.

After the first whissle, I agree there is no place for that.

I still dont see the problem w/ hard coaching... aslong as there is no harm done (physical or emotional).
Am sure a Rex Ryan practice would be interesting..

I have yet to see anyone get a concussion from a basketball at the back of the head. Baseball, hockey puck and maybe a golf ball.. but not a basketball.

Not sure who Tim Rizzo is, but I have to believe that a coach that runs practices like Rice did will not be successful over the long term.

Legendary fiery coaches like Bobby Knight are universally loved by their former players. I have yet to see any of Rice's former players coming to his defense.

It's like a parent that yells all the time. The kids learn to tune them out.

Interesting point. Initial punishment was a fine/suspension then issue was over.. months later gets fired because of public outcry since the tape went public. This actually could set a nasty precedent, which I agree with.

If he doesnt get his remaining salary/or package from the University, he'll lawyer up quite fast.

Winning solves everything. I was on a successful basketball team (ranked #1 for an entire season) so maybe thats why I worship my coach

Funny.. Tom Izzo! I got to stop typing 100wpm

More like you have yet to have it REPORTED is more like it.

Unless Thor is whipping the ball..... In basketball, hitting your head on the floor (been there) , getting kicked in the head after tripping (done that) or receiving an elbow in the head (it hurts) can cause a concussion. Heck I might have had 5-6 myself.... but not by a basketball
