XBOX One Owners Thread

I just got an email from Microsoft inviting me to the EA Access beta. I'm kind of busy with Wolfenstein right now but I'll probably give Madden and Peggle 2 a chance while I have free access.

As a member of the Xbox One Preview, you are getting a first look at EA Access. You'll receive an Xbox Live message on your console with a code to download the EA Access Hub app, and there'll be some quests and surveys available in the Xbox Preview Dashboard app. (Note: While you can download and browse the EA Access Hub app for free, you'll need to purchase a EA Access subscription to enjoy all the benefits.)

It boggles my mind that they intend to charge for people to serve as beta testers.

This is EA... they may have gotten better over the last 2 years but nothing they do that isn't good business sense should surprise anyone...

In that case I'm not interested until they add a lot more games. I assumed it would be free because I've never had to pay for access to a beta before. No thanks.

Actually paying for a beta is the entire idea behind Steam's Early Access if you think about it..

Sony's response to the EA Access announcement is that they didn't want it, didn't provide value to their gamers at $5/mo. Meanwhile they appear ready to charge that same amount to play a ps3 game for 4 hours on PS now.

I would bet that EA went to Microsoft with this first. They put out Titanfall and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare out there first and they seem to have a pretty tight relationship.

I can definitely see this being a good value but it all depends on what they offer. If games are added on a somewhat regular basis it will be a great value because EA puts out a lot of good stuff. If it's mostly last years sports titles it doesn't make as much sense.

Who wants to play Madden 25 once Madden 15 is out? Also who thought it was a good idea to call it Madden 25 when they knew they would have to go back to 15 the next year?

I paid $30 and got 2 games yesterday, the rest is gravy, I'll make a decision on renewal based on what happens between now and then. Just buying Madden digitally - which I was already planning to do - pays for 3+ months due to the discount.

People that might not normally buy those games are the ones playing older sports games, for one, like me downloading FIFA last night. There's also the ignorant 'it's just a roster update' crowd that play one version for years. Just 2 of many use cases.

If you like EA games then this is a great deal. They're going to have to build up their library a bit more for it to have more value. I won't be jumping on this mainly because not many EA games appeal to me (and not having a Xbone also contributes to my decision.)

I agree that this has the potential to be a great deal. I just don't think they should be charging while the program is in beta.

I wouldn't call it "ignorant", more like frugal.
I go a few years at a time, because they cost so much. And I didn't feel the upgrades year to year were worth it, so I waited every couple of years.

Plus I used to rotate every year between Madden & NCAA.

EA Access is now live.

I was originally one of the nay-sayers about EA Access but it looks like I'll be getting it for at least one month. A bunch of the guys in my fantasy football league are getting Madden 15 on Xbox One so I am going to get it this year after a few years off to play online with them. EA Access gives you 10% off digital EA purchases on Xbox One.

It costs $4.99 per month and it will save me $6 on my purchase of Madden 15 and give me access 5 days early so it's kind of a no brainer. I basically pay the same amount as I would have for Madden 15 and get the other perks for free for a month. Out of the initial 4 games offered I will probably only play Peggle 2 but it's still a free game I wouldn't have had access to otherwise. Also it's small enough that I can get what I want out of it in one month. Since I rent most of my games the 10% discount doesn't really mean much so I will only keep it for one month until more games are offered.

Well I downloaded the EA Access Hub app and tried to sign up for service but every time I try to open the app I get a message saying EA services are unavailable at this time. I guess I should have known there would be server launch issues just like every other recent launch that requires the internet.

After 30 minutes on the phone with EA support they determined that my gamertag was not tied to an Origin account. They weren't able to tie it to the Origin account I use on PC and PS4 either. Eventually they decided to create a new Origin account to link my Xbox gamertag to. Once they did this the EA Hub was able to connect and start downloading games.

Call of Duty is getting a nice Advanced Warfare skinned Xbox One and controller bundle with a 1TB hard drive. It also comes with the game and some additional DLC. The only problem I can see with this is that it is the same price as the Xbox One with Kinect but it doesn't include the Kinect. In my mind that makes the Titanfall bundle a better deal if you can still find one of those unless you really need the limited edition console or 1TB drive.

I do think it's a little strange that they are doing a limited edition console for a game like COD but the exclusive Sunset Overdrive bundle just comes with a plain white console. I'm sure they skipped the Master Chief Collection because they are going to make a custom Halo 5 console in a couple years. It just seems like COD is kind of a weird game to design your first limited edition console around. I will say that the white Xbox One and controller that come with Sunset Overdrive looks sharp.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/12/gamescom-2014-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-is-xbox-one-exclusive

In other news Rise of the Tomb Raider will be an Xbox One exclusive. Microsoft seems to be bringing back the third party exclusive games that used to be pretty common in the PS1/PS2 era. They were pretty rare last gen but now we have already seen Titanfall, Peggle 2, and PvZ Garden Warfare from EA and now Rise of the Tomb Raider from Square Enix.

PvZ was a timed exclusive. That's coming out on all other systems later this month.

A little annoyed there isn't a Halo bundle. That would be the one I'd get, but I'd also want to get the Kinect as well.
