If a genie is temporarily moved to a second location does the dish need to be moved as well or could it be a different dish?
I am currently on cable but looking to change. I am seasonal - six months north, six months south. The southern location is locked in to cable via homeowner's association agreement so I only need Direct TV at the northern location six months at a time. My problem is we always run a few weeks behind in viewing what we record so when we move south would need to take the genie with us and figure out how to watch what has been recorded.
I researched GenieGo and decided it is too buggy and pricey on Ebay. Reviews I've read are pretty bad. Not even sure where I would find another legitimate dish but no point in looking if it won't work anyway.
Would appreciate any suggestions out there given my situation.

If the LNB's are the same, you can move with no problem. If you have for instance a SWM5 at one location, and a SWM3 in another, you will need to re-run setup at each location, or your receiver could act funny at times.

Okay, good to know. I may be on the right track. Would need to wait on installation to know what type dish to buy for 2nd location.
Thanks for the prompt reply!

The GenieGo isnt even being sold other than ebay.....so its an old idea being put to rest...
The new Geinies are going to have a built in one(not sure which ones will get it, sorry)....Only some states have it up and running...
Not alot of talk on how its working? FYI

Thanks for the input. After reading reviews it is no wonder D* stopped selling them....

Bobinaz,
As mentioned ... if you order or get ahold of the same dish that you will be using up north, have it installed and you will be able to hook it up in both locations and use it with no changes to be made ...
If you have a different, but still SWM slimline, most you would have to do is run the Repeat Sat Set Up when you swap locations.

1 thing you want to make sure of, the Genies use a Power Insertor as well, you MUST have one at both locations (or at least remember to bring it with you each time.)
The Power Insertor supplies the voltage to the dish unit for the Genie.

Thank you for the additional information. Another new term for me to research - "power insertor". Probably why broadband cable and Direct TV don't share the same coax coming into the house....

With most recvrs prior to.the Genie the recvrs supplied the power to the LNB ....
Since the Genie, you've needed a Power Insertor to power the lnb for the recvrs.

H44 & HR54 will supply power to the LNB and don't require a power inserter. You just have to make certain that these receivers are connected to the power passthrough port on the splitter.

Ya know, I still don't know why they did that, bringing in 2 recvrs that have built in PIs, what a great way to confuse people.

It's one of the reasons why Directv doesn't want customers working on their own setups. Too many don't really know how it works and end up screwing things up.

Now that comment I do understand :) I don't have a clue. If I end up switching to satellite from cable, I will just wait on the installer to advise which model dish I should acquire for the second location.
Thanks to all for your information.

I too am in two locations when I went to directv I was told I was told I could add a dish at the other location for $50 but when I went to do that I was told nope $225. I escalated and got that down to to $75 Same dish just pack my receiver in a foam lined suitcase plug it all up there and in minutes I am up and running biggest issue is locals. I got an am21 so if I am at one location for just a short period I don't necessarily call in and change my location. If I don't match my actual location no locals on satellite so I then use the am21 for locals

Only the Hr54. The Hr44 still needs the power inserter.

Btw it does not matter if your set on SL3 or SL5. It's good to change it in setup, but either way it will work.

The only time it would create an issue is if your getting programming from the 119 satellite.

He mentioned the H44, not the HR44 ...
I've never used a H44, so I don't know which way that one is.
