iOS 11

I've been playing around with it some more and it looks like I'm hitting the "2" twice on my way over to the "1" when I try too fast. I did get it to leave the "1" highlighted occasionally.

Apple finally admitts to throttling older iPhones as their batteries age.

While many die hard Apple fans will adamantly deny anything nefarious in this practice, I for one think that it stinks to high heaven. Apple should have been upfront with this rather than hiding it in their software updates with no mention of it. I don't think Apple should be on the hook for a new battery in an old phone, but......

Thanks for that Frank. I think my 6+ battery is failing. I do lots of video with it and the battery drops fast and the phone gets warm. Not sure I should just try a battery change or get an X. I was hoping to wait on the gen 2 of the X before upgrading.

I might just look into a new battery. I wonder how that works?

Its around $70 bucks for a new battery with installation at Batteries Plus locations.

RIS11110 - Apple iPhone 6 Plus Battery Replacement at Batteries Plus Bulbs

There is a program called ibackupbot that you can install on your computer as a free trial and it will run the same diagnostics that Apple does and show you the remaining charging capacity of your iphone battery compared to the original spec and how many charging cycles it has been through.

My 6+ was at 65% of original capacity a couple months ago and is still fine for normal daily activities but as soon as I do video or maps it drops quickly and is nearly dead within in 20 mins. I'm planning on having the battery replaced instead of getting a new phone. For me it's not the worth the money for a new phone yet. This one still does everything I need in a phone/mobile platform

Apple reveals iPhone battery life fix ... try not to laugh

My wife and I have two iPhone SE's and my mother has an iPhone 5S. When we start having battery issues I might look into something like this, or sending the phones in to have the batteries replaced. A last resort which may be the best option is just buy new phones in a couple years........;)

Apple does it for $80. For ten bucks, I’d go with Apple. Even though the last replacement is not holding up well.

I know the guys at our Batteries Plus. Not so sure I’d want them handling my iPhone. I guess I could look into any warranty and damage coverage claims.

When I’m done with this 6+, it goes to my MiL. I was waiting for an iPhone with band 71 coverage, but now I’m not so sure.

Don, if you're feeling adventurous, iFixit.com has a Battery Replacement guide for your iPhone 6+ here: iPhone 6 Plus Battery Replacement
Plus, their replacement battery is only $24.99 iPhone 6 Plus Replacement Battery (616-0770, 616-0772, 616-0765, 616-0802 ) Part Only ($29.99 if you want the tools as well.)

I was thinking the same thing. If you’re worried about having someone else do it then take matters into your own hands. If you were otherwise going to upgrade then you have nothing to lose. Of course anytime anyone is going to open up your phone make a backup first.

Regarding the way iOS throttles the OS to minimize power spikes causing the battery to cut out, that is just piss-pour engineering. Lithium Ion cells are fairly well known, and Apple supposedly engineers their own cells (maybe they don't anymore) but they should know how the cell will age and what the capabilities are at various numbers of discharge cycles. Apple claims that reducing clocking of the A-series chip will go unnoticed is obviously naïve as Redditors were all over this.

It would be nice if Apple made this an option. Maybe I can live with my iPhone 6 being at 10% at the end of my day instead of 55% with the throttling. I would rather have that than the 15 second launch times for some apps I've been experiencing.

Or, Apple implements a free battery replacement program for the iPhone 6/6+/6s/6s+/7 models since there is an apparent defect in either the Li-Ion battery or the Power Management, and at least the Li-Ion batteries can be replaced, unlike the PM chips.

I totally agree on that. But we all know pigs will fly before Apple owns up to there mistakes. Especially if it costs them money.

Took me 6 hours to charge mine up today from 10% to 100%. Just a month ago the phone would last typically 3-4 days. And charging it up from 10% to 100% only took 2-3 hours.

I just checked and the battery for the 6+ is only $20. I'll do the repair / replacement myself. I have the tools. Two screws opens up the case. The battery just plugs in under a cover held in place by two more screws. I already opened it up to have a look. If I had the battery, I would just have done the replacement tonight. Ordering a new one tomorrow but it won't be here until next week.

Hard to believe but my 6+ is nearly 3 years old now. I have no complaints about what it can do technically.

I would have purchased the X had it been a 4K screen in 16x9 format but when I saw what it was, I ordered the Sony XZ Premium instead. Needed a 4K screen for my 360VR goggles.

I had my iPhone 6+ battery replaced in March of this year but by September the battery was getting weak again. I “upgraded” to a 6s+. When you get a new iPhone you can really see the issues you had when your iPhone ages.

I feel the same way. I have a charging cable on my desk at work, in my car, and in my lunch bag. Plenty of charging options at home. I mean, I can't complain about this 6+ in that it does last all day easily but it is slow. I notice this all the time. I'll probably upgrade to a new phone soon (could be in 2 weeks, I may hold off 2 months, or longer...) so a replacement battery doesn't make much sense at this point.

This morning I took mine apart to see how difficult it was and pretty easy. I didn't remove the battery as it was glued in so I will wait until the new kit arrives. Sunday? I decided to get the kit for $4 more because the screws are so tiny I wanted extra. Didn't need the additional screw drivers because I already have those in my large ifixit kit.

I don't think my battery is all that bad but it's heading that direction fast.

Yes, get the kit with screws. Know why they include new screws ? Check the ones you removed.... They're fairly soft and if you weren't pretty careful or they weren't in too tight, you're likely to strip them. Knowing Apple, this is by design. When Apple opens phones up, I'll bet money they replace these screws as well.

And the other advantage is the battery by itself does not include the tape adhesive to stick the new battery to the case. The tape alone is sold for $3.99, so that's practically the whole delta there.

The reason I'm not going touch mine is I think my NFC is kaput. After my Wife gets her Christmas present, I'll get some money back in-trade at the Apple Store, along with mine, on the iPhone 8. If Apple will only take one, I'll just trade in the one that knocks the most price off of the new phone and Gazelle the other for an Amazon Gift Card.
