2017-18 NCAA Football Thread

That is true, and its definitely an excuse, but as a fan of a team that had to "settle" for a big bowl in the recent past, I can understand it.

Consider this, had auburn won the SEC, they would have been in the playoff. That is what they aimed for. They didnt however, and as big as the bowl game was, it was a let down for them and their fans.

For UCF however, it was a statement game. If I were a Auburn fan (that hurt to type), this game would have worried me when it was announced. For one, UCF is a VERY good team, no matter the circumstances. Add to that that UCF was playing with a chip on their shoulder, and Auburn was playing a consolation prize game.

So excuse or not, I do understand it, and think there is probably some validity to it.
Like I said it's a New Year's six game or it was a BCS game. When Ohio State gets torched I own up to it. No excuses here. Don't you think they were let down this year? Wanted to play in the playoff but "settled" for the Cotton.

It's just amazing how it's always used when a big SEC team loses.

Big difference in getting up for who they play as well.

Both teams had to settle for a lesser bowl.

However OSU got to play USC, which to the average fan and player, I would bet is far more exciting and motivating than playing UCF.

As a fan would you have been nearly as excited about the cotton bowl if your opponent was South Alabama? As a player, would they have?

Lately yes, but the East won the championship 7 out of the first 10 years that they had the game. Then they spit the next eight games 4-4 before the west became the dominant division and won 8 in a row. Now georgia swung it back to the east this season.

Currently the west holds a 14-12 lead in the game. Pretty even.
No, Georgia didn't swing it back this year ... Georgia may have won it, but I was referring to the division as a whole.
Yes the East was good when Urban was there, its rare that the East has more than one dominant team.

Now your making me wish we could see Auburn and USC.

I should have worded that last part better, you are right, this season the west was still the better division, and has been lately. The point I was trying to make is, it has not always been that way. SInce the divisions split and the champ game started, it has been fairly equal from a historical perspective, with the east being by far the stronger division at the start. Now it is the other way.

It wont stay that way though.

When did Saban start at Bama ?

I see your point but Bama played Oklahoma in the Sugar in 2014. That same excuse was used.

I still think Urban would have got them up no matter who they played. They were up for Clemson last year and just got smoked.

Tressel was always good at that. They got smoked in a couple games but he had a great BCS record.

I put the 2014 sugar bowl directly on the coaching staff. It was VERY disappointing the way the Iron Bowl went, and it was a similar "let down", but that game was no "trap game". It was Oklahoma, and they just beat us.

I will say as a fan, It was so gut wrenching after the Iron Bowl loss, and how it happened, I really did not care about the Sugar at all. Ughh, I still hate to think of it. What a crappy way to end a season.

I probably shouldn't clarify, as I know what will come next, but the Oklahoma game was only the kicker. The gut wrenching part was the kick six in the iron bowl. Man, I hope none of you ever have to go through that as a fan with so much on the line. lol :D

Buckeyes picked up another stud on the D Line tonight while losing another potential commit to Penn State.
DE Tyreke Smith committed while Jason Owen went to PSU.
Both were 4 star DE's

Things go in cycles. They always have and they always will. It is simply life.

I personally like the current playoff system and I would not want to see it expanded past 6 teams. But no matter how many teams, there WILL ALWAYS be an argument for leaving a deserving team out. It is what fans do.
