or have a real playoff set with 8 or 16 teams....This has been just awful for 100 years....Plenty of great teams never get a chance to play!....This being undefeted is not the perfect way to rank teams....!
Agreed. They need to go to a real playoff like every other division in NCAA football.

Automatic slots for each of the conference champions (both P5 and non-P5) and at large slots to fill the brackets to however many teams the decide on (12, 16 or 24).

Ranking Michigan over Alabama would have probably necessitated an Alabama/Georgia rematch in the semifinals which would have riled the SEC snobs because the think they should be able to get two of their teams in the championship game by default.

It was more for the ESPN brass who like to dictate who's in the games in order to drive ratings.

I'm not certain why Newtonian Physics is being referenced here. Michigan lost to a team not as good as Alabama. Their position at #2 isn't inertial. Just more evidence of nonsensical system that is College Football rankings.

If you look at the quoted portion of the article... or what I wrote, it'll become very apparent.
At the same time, you could look at Bama and say "WHY" is Bama still in the top 4 after the poor showing they had against others that they were suppose to beat handily ... but they DIDN'T drop then, Why, because its Bama.

I have to say Saban has his team playing Great when the games matter most .... other times, not so much.

What's worse? Losing to #25 Texas A&M (8-4) or #10 Michigan State (10-2)?

Alabama's loss is easily worse than Michigan's loss. Coupled with Alabama's narrow escapes against LSU & Aubarn, it's easy to see that Michigan has been more dominate than Alabama.

Have they though? Bama is 3-1 against top 25. Michigan is 2-1.

Bama had some struggle wins, one being the rivalry game. Michigan had some close wins against the a 5-7 Rutgers at home, and a 3-9 Nebraska on the road.

Alabama ranked 6 in total offense, Michigan ranked 18. In defense, Bama was 8 and Michigan 13.

All measurable criteria would say Bama was more dominant throughout the season, but two of the later games are fresher on peoples mind I guess.

It's the later games that should be looked at, as it shows how a team has improved.

In the end, I expect to see a great game between Alabama (after handily beating Cincinnati) and Michigan (after embarrassing Georgia).

Unfortunately Michigan is the one team in the Big "Ten" that isn't owned by the SEC.

See, I dont think Michigan stands a chance against Georgia. I fully expect a SEC champ rematch in the natty.

The BCS consists of two human elements, or polls, from which two-thirds of the BCS formula is taken. The two polls are the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

The human element is used is as follows: First, take the Harris Interactive, which includes 105 voters. All 105 voters vote on teams 1-25 and points are awarded on a reverse basis, 25 for a first-place vote, 24 for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote, and so on until one point is awarded for a 25th-place vote.

If all 105 voters decided to vote one team first, the team would be awarded 105 times 25 points, or 2875 Harris Poll Points. Therefore, a perfect score in the eyes of the Harris Poll voters is a 2625. The BCS takes the votes received by a team and divides that number by the perfect score (2625) for a decimal value of 1.000 or less.

For example, Ohio State, the BCS’s No. 2 in the seventh BCS standings of 2013, received 2488 points from the Harris Poll voters on November 20, the seventh Harris Poll of the year. The BCS divided 2488 by the perfect score 2625, to arrive at the Boise State’s Harris Poll score.

Harris Poll BCS Calculation Boise State Example: (2488/2625)=.9478

The same calculation is mirrored with the ESPN/USA Today Coach’s Poll. The Coach’s Poll consists of 62 voters, and the scale scoring for votes mirrors that of the Harris Poll’s. Therefore, in the Coach’s Poll, the perfect score is 62 times 25, or 1550.

The BCS then completes the same calculation and divides the score received by a team by the perfect score, 1550.

For example, Ohio State received 1462 points from the Coaches’ Poll during the seventh BCS week of 2013. The BCS divided 1462 by 1550, the perfect score in 2013 to arrive at Boise State’s Coaches Poll score.

Coaches’ Poll BCS Calculation Boise State Example: (1462/1550)=.9432

Computer Element

The third and final part of the BCS calculations is derived from six computer rankings posted weekly. The six computer polls, managed by people, newspapers and the BCS itself are: Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin’s USA Today and Peter Wolfe.

Find out how each one of the six BCS computer polls works here.

The BCS aggregates the standings of each of the six computer polls and awards teams 25 points for a first-place standing on a computer poll, 24 for a second, 23 for a third, and so on, just as in the human element, until one point is given for a 25th-place vote.

The BCS takes the six point values and removes the lowest and highest point values given to a specific team. Four point values are left, which the BCS adds together.

Because a perfect score would mean receiving four first-place votes, or four 25 point values, the BCS divides the team’s four computer ranking point values by 100 to arrive at the composite computer ranking value.

I certainly would ask that! And of course, you are right about it being Bama. And Michigan is where they are mainly because someone from the Big Ten needs to be in the top 4. Again cartels gonna cartel.
I have to9 say Saban has his team playing Great when the games matter most .... other times, not so much.
Yeah, it is always quite disappointing they win most of the important games.

But thats always the case .... whats fresh in peoples minds matter most .

A team can be crummy in the beginning of the season and possibly lose, while going thru the rest of the season improving ... is the team at the end of the year, the same as the one in the beginning ?
NO.

Of course.

In the case of Bama, are you focusing on the close game against Auburn, or the dominating performance against one of the best defenses of the past decade?

Personally, I think far too much is being made of the Auburn and LSU games. Both big rivalry games, and we all know how those can go. Out of all of the top teams, I cant really think of any that didnt have close wins, except for Georgia. Ive already pointed out two for Michigan, against worse teams that Bama played close.

So I look at the entire season. Statisically, Bama was more dominant than Michigan, against a tougher schedule. Its just numbers.

Michigan was not "Dominate" till the end of the season.
The Buckeyes often look the same as Most of the TOUGH games are scheduled at the end of the year.

Most cases in the last 5 years or so have them playing those that are highly ranked at the end of the season.

Unlike having Central Western Carolina before your biggest game of the year.

Fwiw, I don't think Georgia's D is all that Generational Great either.

Alot of peoples opinion changed after Alabama cut through them, but most that watched any football at all before that game would hard pressed to say that with a straight face.

Well, we CAN throw the same quotes at them that get thrown at Others ...

But had Bama lose to Auburn, they would of been knocked out of the top four and maybe land over 10.....Thats why we see those close games as so important!

Of course they would have, and I would have been fine with it. Ive seen enough Iron Bowls however to know they are often crazy, so I dont toss out the rest of the season based on a close game. Close games happen. Its football.

I’ll just apologize to lakebum431 for the officiating during the Music City Bowl. I’m not sure what Tennessee did to the ACC to make the refs put the TN players under a microscope and let the Boilers get away with a couple of defensive holds; I would rather see the game determined by the players’ skill and spirit than some arbitrary enforcement of rules based on which team broke them.

But sometimes the flags fly your way, so I’m going to take a Boilermaker 9-Win Season in 2021! Or, should I say, the Spoilermakers? ;)

Anyone watching these Bowl games ?
Outside of YOUR Team ?

Offense ran wild on both sides ...

What did you think of the call to end the game (in OT, forward progress) I could see both sides.

I still Hate the idea that your allowed to push and or pull your player .... the Tennessee guy was trying to pull the ball carrier across the goal line (didn't work, but could have).
