Meaning of Michigan - Ohio State in a 12 team playoff:

Zero.

Alabama - Tennessee:

Zero.

Florida - Georgia:

Zero.

Both teams could suck and those rivalry games would still mean something to the fans.

Seems to me, the only ones that are against a playoff expansion are the few who keep getting into the championship game (or 4-team playoff).

I am not saying Bama should make it this year, but I could definitely see the argument of them over OSU, and I am sure Jimbo could see the argument for them over Bama.


In any case, both teams just had to win to keep it from being a discussion, and they didnt.

True, however you have to win when it counts. Neither bama or osu did that in the crunch situation this year.

Thats pretty much the reason for the Season ... to determine who is good enough to get there.

Your right, neither Bama or the Buckeyes played well enough, when it counted.

Exactly, it allows teams like Utah which should have played for the title in 2008 and Boise State the following year. Or even Penn State back in 1994.

College football has always been about having the least losses, preferably zero, against the best schedule. In terms of the national championship, and then a series of bowls, the goal being to get in to ones of more prestige and then winning it, which is different than a soul crushing tournament where there is one winner and everyone else is a POS. As the playoffs expand, 90% of the division will know going in they have no shot at the playoffs, and the reward for a solid 8-4 or 9-3 season is, well, nothing.

Wins and losses is all that counts ... Buckeyes have ONLY 1 loss, same as many others.
Outside of the TTUN loss, they Won ALL thier games by 13 or more points.

I REALLY wish they had decided to go with an 8 team playoff instead of the 12 team that they are considering (not sure if its actually officially 12 yet).

This is NOT basketball ... the chance of a #12 team winning what is it 4 more games against even better competition, is Very slim.

I'd prefer them to go to 16.

This is NOT basketball ... the chance of a #12 team winning what is it 4 more games against even better competition, is Very slim.

Still happens though.

As far as SEC dominance is concerned, neither does the Big Ten.

If you want to make your argument based on wins & loses, you should stick to that, otherwise it's as hollow as your past complaints about "good weather" in the South back when Florida crushed Ohio State in the BCS game.

And Alabama is not one of the teams I am talking about. In the coming 12 team playoff, I can write down 20 teams and 12 of those will be in the playoffs, every year. The playoffs will just be a remix, every year, of the 12 out of 20 teams, with a once in a lifetime exception. For them, the regular season is really meaningless, because making the playoffs is all that matters, and they always will.

But the rest of the division? And not just the "group of 5" but literally everyone else? There are plenty of "power 5" schools who will NEVER make the playoffs. And they are fine with that. 9-3 and being Gator Bowl champions is about all some place like Purdue, or Kentucky, or NC State, or Washington State, or Kansas State, EVER will do.

With the bowls gone, and yes, expanded playoffs will kill the bowls, congratulations, you went 9-3. Your reward? Nothing.

And not with a 1-12 ranking necessarily. This does give the "little conferences" the shot they have been begging for, at least somewhat. One of the G5 champs will be making it yearly, and possibly in some odd circumstances another one could.

I like the on campus aspect of this as well.

The 12-team Playoff will be made up of the six conference champions ranked highest by the committee, with no minimum ranking requirement, and the six highest-ranked teams not among the conference champions. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded Nos. 1 through 4 and will receive a first-round bye. The other eight CFP teams would play in the first round (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7, No. 9 at No. 8) held at the higher seed on a campus site or another location selected by the higher seed.

What?! Oi, I hate college football... or at least the business of it.

I don't get the Bye here, I mean other than 12 not being a power of 2. It isn't like any school earned it. 12 teams also is too many (8 would be a bit more manageable)... but this is the best defense to ensure Alabama's and OSU's are in the tournament (and possibly Notre Dame, but this set up makes that a bit harder, which means I expect Notre Dame to start playing a schedule that has more cream puffs than a bakery such as Votre Dame Nun College). This set up helps one small school program. But I suppose one is better than none.

It really gets frustrating how fixed these processes are. This is the third Cartel solution with their thumb firmly on the scale.
