12 more HD channels by the end of March?

As for channels appearing that don't currently exist,
I can believe that, seeing there are alot of channels that want to go HD, but are waiting for someone that is available to show them, what good is being available in HD if you not on any provider to show it.

If you look at the list that has been going around about D* channels in the fall, there are a lot of them just waiting.

Q. DISH went out and did some type of changes receintly to allow them to get more HD channels on fewer transponders so they could get more HD up and DISH users were saying that the picture actually looked much better after the move.

Why can't D* do this type of thing ??? Or can they ???

I am not sure what you are trying to say. All I am saying is that many of the channels are not live now and won't be by the end of March.

Alook what E* has done since they are now so fearful of the huge capacity that D* will have soon - they are giving away free HD-DVRs now - how come they didn't give them away last year? And in this country, NOBODY gives something for free without reason.

Is E* "giving away" 622s? Aren't they just leasing them with no upfront fees, the same way they do with their other DVRs? I don't see how that is "running scared". It seems to me that they got what they could from early adopters, and now have a stable enough HD base that they can treat HD just like the rest of their business.

The idea of giving out, or leasing, equipment at a loss to lock in long term contracts is hardly unique to E*. It is a proven business model.

Spize make sure you get the name of the CSR next time so you can report them for giving out false information. There are quite a few of these people out there just trying to get people to sign there life away for a year or two. Hopefully NGHC will kick on tomorrow, but don't bet on anymore channels this month.

I know - its just a coincidence that they have started to give them away now. Sure. I have a bridge to sell you.

No one gives away anything if they can get money for it - that is the more proven business model in the pay TV industry! BTW, I have already stated I think its a good move by them - because, by mid-summer, the tide of HD will be well on the D* side.

I don't think it is a coincidence. Having no up front fee two years ago would make no sense, as they did not exist then. Making that change long after the early adopters have moved on makes no sense either. The price for leasing the 622 started out high, and has dropped ever since until it reached their standard business model.

You can correlate just about anything with D*'s HD promises, because those promises have been going on for a long, long time. Did E* introduce the 622 because D* was planning to have lots of HD one day? Did their other price reductions come about from fear of D*'s HD plans? Did they acquire VOOM rights because they fear D*? Or could it just be that E* is in the Satellite TV business, and is playing the HD market the same way they plan the SD market? They have their price points for maximum profits and they try to hit them as best they can.

Maybe D* will slot 2 hours per day to these 12 HD channels and therefore can have twelve more HD channels by the end of March. or Maybe they can upconvert Scifi to 940x520 and call it HD since there is no scifi-hd yet. ** just J/K **

Yeah right, what a foolish argument you're making. The promises have been ging on for a long time - but the promise has remained constant. Launch SW1/2 and D10/11 and the capacity will be there. SW1/2 up and running, D10 shortly. That is why they are giving it away NOW. And as I said twice here already, stop being such a E* fanboy, I think its a GREAT move by them. Take your head out of the ground already.

LOL! I'm a fanboy of no company. The second I think D*is offering a better package for my needs, I'll be a D* customer. And I have plenty of complaints about E*. I just have no patience for absurdity. To say that E* is leasing their 622 under the exact same model as all their other DVRs because they are scared is silly. Why doesn't E* have an upfront fee for their SD DVRs? Because they are running scared?

Could it be that E* is treating their HD business like their SD business because that is their business model? They come out with a new product, sell it for a lot for a while, then for a little for a while, and then lease it with no up front cost. You are arguing that E* is behaving exactly the way they always have because they have suddenly become scared.

If you really objected to fanboys, you would refuse to be one.

Hey - I admit to being a fan of D*. If I wanted any other provider I would switch. And then NOT waste my time complaining about 'another' provider.

ScoBuck calling someone else a fanboy?

There are times where one should be so filled with laughter they explode....but for some strange reason they just can not move their facial muscles.....this would be one of those times.

Guys - please don't turn this into another hijacked thread - consider yourselves warned

Seeing as how I am really skeptical, how much real capacity does D* for HD even with D10 going up? According to Lyngsat SW1 has 69 channels on it 43 of those are HD locals, SW2 has 49 channels on it all of them HD locals. We all know there isn't much room right now for more HD so, when D10 goes up not counting the additional HD locals D* will put up how much room will their be for national HD?

Just asking/guessing because I am no expert on it, but as far as DirecTV 10 (and then DirecTV 11) would a good guess be at least 4 MPEG4 channels per available transponder?
