I would have to hope and expect that FiOS would have a lot more bandwidth - after all it is a BRAND NEW system rolling out - unlike cable and the satellite companies and their legacy systems.

Without a substantial offering, why would ANYBODY take their service? And even with that being said, the FiOS sports offering is way behind virtually every other provider. So the target D* customer probably won't switch over anyhow.

But rather than knock them as they attempt to gain rights in more markets (which is good for everybody), we should root them on. It's already available in my market, and I think because of that, CABLEVISION won't raise rates, and that in turn helps keep both D* and E* prices down.

Good point! Also, I am hoping AT&T gets into gear to push everyone else, both in price and quality. I have not had ANYTHING but OTA, Netflix and my blue ray since October of last year....HAD E*(big fight, long story) but JUST might wait it out to see JUST what happens in the fall with D* and everyone else.:up

We have both FIOS and DirecTV. We are charter D* subscribers and a Nielsen family. We have five D* boxes, two of which are HD DVRs, one HR20 and one older HR10-250 with TiVo software. It could not be said that we do not vote for D* with our consumer $$s I am probably the only straight guy I know who does not get the NFL Season Ticket.

FIOS has a better picture and more movie and entertainment channels in HD, and it's cheaper. I like having all the movie channels in HD instead of only HBO and Showtime.

D* is better for sports and they have better hardware-their boxes/DVRs are pretty much state of the art and better than the tired second generation Motorola boxes FIOS puts out.

I am not particularly critical of D* in any respect except that their PR department only has promises to sell right now and so that's what they sell. Regardless of what D* promises, right now FIOS is better for me (maybe not you D* white knights) today for entertainment and D* is better for sports I don't watch and DVRs which fit a whole house system.

My sole point was that I only value what I can watch now, not in the fall or at sometime in the future. I learned long ago in Southeast Asia that next week is sometimes an elusive concept. If you told me I had a beer in the refrigerator and one at the supermarket I could buy in September, I know which I'd pick. Or, why not have both?

If D* ever does come through with their plans, I'm not sure you would need or want FIOS unless FIOS really improved their hardware. But, if you want to watch NGC or Starz HD,for example, right now in my area, you would have to watch on FIOS or Time Warner. D* says they'll have it sometime in the future. O.K. fair enough. I want it now, and I have it. No need to belittle me or D* by simply pointing out that they do not yet have some of what what competitors already do in this area.

Right now, FIOS is a niche market and not available in most areas. But, where you can get it, it's very, very good and very, very cheap. Nothing to buy, no contracts and 0 start-up costs for us. We have it all, but D* is not better or worse for what they might have-they do not have it now-that's all I said. You guys who always defend them no matter what are very entertaining. I like D* too-always have. I love talking to their guys at CES every year and then watching what they say is coming come out much later than they forecast, also. It always happens, though, just late.

You have made some very good points.

D* is strong for "Sports"
FIOS as you mentioned for Entertainment, I would also addDISH to this part of the statement and that is why alot of us favor D*, because they deliver more sports also in HD (some).

I know Sports is the reason I chose D* in the first place and I am glad to see the new sats going up to add more HD and Sports.

However, I do not see why it is you continue to make it sound like D* is lying about thier product coming out, you make it sound like thay said they will have more HD available, but not till 2012, when actually September is only a few short months away.

D*'s biggest mistake may have been letting thier plans be known when it was going to take a few years to impliment, therefore allowing all the D* bashers 2 years to shout "It's not done yet " and making claims that it won't happen. and all the other BS that gets posted about them not being done yet.... daily.

Would you rather your provider (whoever it may be) to not let ANY info out and expect to keep subs happy doing what appears to be nothing, while all along your working in the background to make major changes ???

They are like the kids in the back of the car on a long trip. They know that the trip will take 10 hrs, they have been told all that, all summer BEFOREHAND, but STILL, right after you pull out of the driveway, they start the "Are we there yet" every 10 minutes until you get there, and cry all along the way about everything, even though they were ALREADY aware of the process.

LOL! They can't see the forest for the trees. KIDS!?!

jimbos - I for one think it was actually brilliant of them to publicize their HD rollout plans back in 2004 - and for quite a few reasons.

1) In 2004 (and even still today), there were not all that many national HD channels (and in fact I believe D* had more than E*) - but VOOM was alive and trying to get that market. It is only due to the failure of VOOM (they peaked at under 40,000 subs nationwide) - that DISH moved ahead. To see them commit the money to a project like they announced was great - and allowed us all to follow their progress (and the slipups). And as stated, overall I believe they are on or close to schedule!

2) Yes, since E* bought Rainbow 1 and committed to a 15 year programming deal, DISH has had MORE CHANNELS than DirecTV, and yes they also have some of them in rull rezz (but most are HD-lite - just like D*). So, almost a 2 year advantage to DISH. And I won't get into the VOOM issue - this is strictly based on number of channels. But (and think about this one), if VOOM had not failed, where would DISH be? Probably in the SAME position as D* I suppose.

3) I am called a D* fanboy, but the reality has always been that I selected DirecTV specifically when the YES network launched, as DISH (still doesn't offer it) and CABLEVISION (didn't offer it until the second season) - didn't have it! This is where the programming part of the argument comes in - no matter how many channels are offered, if they are channels you don't watch, then who cares how many there are? Give me the 10-15 I watch, and frankly they can keep ALL of the others. I'm a fanboy - but only until another provider can match D*s sports offering, then I would move in a moment. So I guess I am a fanboy of sports.

4) I actually get a laugh sometimes out of the comments I read about the DirecTV HD plan, because it is truly a good one and seems to be on target. As I have posted before, the plan is not only about new sats and new channels - but it also about new infrastructure, not only for DirecTV but also IN THEIR CUSTOMER BASE. Remember that they have been rolling out MPEG4 lils for almost 2 years, and that they have been moving their HD base onto the new platform ALREADY. By the time the HD nationals launch, they will have opened up about 70 or so markets (the largest ones for the most part) for HD locals. The fact that they are having so much success in placing the new HR-20 DVR - it also means that those folks have the new dish and are ready to go. Can you imagine the logistics of having to upgrade a national base all in one shot to the Ka/Ku platform - a nightmare for sure, and that would have been disaster IMO.

5) I feel that any reasonably thinking adult would realize the potential for setback and delay in this type of endeavour after all it is almost a BILLION DOLLAR venture, requires MANY different organizations, and lots can happen. But knowing that they are working hard at achieving it is my bottom line.

6) There will always be those that have opposing views, let them speak freely. If they are happy with what they have, good for them. I am happy with what I have - and with what I believe is coming shortly.

7) Even the advertising - it has everybody's attention, both good and bad - but that is the goal - to be noticed. It has accomplished its goal for sure. Brilliant really.

Lets just say ,It all better be worth the wait !! Because I'm starting to get worried. If I don't see some results by september,I 'm going to start looking elsewhere.I don't want to sound like a jerk, because I stand for Directv 9 out of 10 times. But enough is enough.I have HD needs as well and Dish has alot of them NOW! what happends in September, who's to say Directv won't get outdone again by Dish.I'm sure they can launch a Satellite too.Retention department for Directv isn't giving me much of a reason to stay.So maybe someone can help me decide.

When the day comes that another company can offer you more of what you want, YOU SHOULD switch.

As far as your September date - it only depends on ONE THING - a satellite launch.

As far as DISH outdong D* - I am certain they are not going t stand still.

As far as getting something from retention - what are you asking for, and why do they owe you anything? Having a problem?

They owe me programming. I have all this HD equipment,But guess what No HD !! At $140 per month for programming on 3 HD tv's and No HD ! It gets a little upsetting.

This is what I am counting on. If they don't keep up or if their pricing does not compete I will have a viable alternative.

Being a Sports nut that I am, I do NOT have that viable option to go to another provider, witch is also why I don't mind having a 2 year commitment....
That said, after you have concluded your 2 year commitment you should be able to do other upgrades without the commitment, you have already shown your loyalty for 2 years.

I was a Sunday Ticket sub for years but have found it not worth the money to watch the Lion's on Sunday. I will still follow them on SportsCenter but I refuse to pay over $200 to see them lose every week.

Well, how long did it take you to figure out that the Lions would not be worth the ST money ?????

It works better if your paying the ST money to see a team that actually has a chance to win year in and year out.
I live in Lions territory, but buy the ST to see the Steelers !!!

And YES the Steelers will be back next year !

Jimbo

They will have to get past the Bengals and that ain't gonna happen. :D

What Bengals ?
They will be down to about 10 players by the time the season starts next year, not enough to field a team, let alone a playoff caliber team !!!!

To be fair, you got all that HD equipment knowing full well what DirecTV offers in terms of HD. ;)

I have to agree that you know what your getting before you sign up. You can never count on what could come in the future.
