Well, I think so. ANY development which increases better television available to consumers is a good one to me, even if you can find ways to criticize. I just do not see how the launch of D10 can do anything to lessen what's available, so I can't understand why you'd ever gripe about it.

You can gripe about the idiots in the DirecTV PR dept overclaiming and overhyping everything D* does, but it's hard to gripe about what the D* engineers are trying to deliver to us.

More capacity, more channels, more competition! That's what I'm talkin' about.

Fly, Baby, fly!

I'm in total agreement with the part about this (and all developments) that increase programming and choices to the consumers, and cannot for the life of me understand why anyone feels the need to be negative about this sat launch.

I totally disagree with the part about the DirecTV PR Department - first of all - it is their job to create hype and buzz, so I would think that they have done an outstanding job in doing so.

As far as overclaiming - well I think the jury is still out on that one. It is not yet December 31st, and I for one feel absolutely no need to 'pre-judge' what the landscape will look like OVER 6 MONTHS FROM NOW.

I do see that the number of content providers that are announcing launching of new HD channels between September and December is expanding on a regular basis, and until all of the dust settles and we see what is ACTUALLY in place, it is really a non-issue IMO.

And best of all the scheduled launch date is now only 13 days away.

I don't see anyone posting anything negative about the launch. I see several posters trying to temper the claims of DIRECTV's marketroids in an effort to put them in a realistic context.

I think it is important to follow what is going on and it should not take a back seat to the myriad announcements and proclamations that DIRECTV makes.

Harshness is a Dish sub, maybe he has D* as well. Seems like a good guy to me. Maybe a little on the pessimistic side.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion for sure. But until we see what is actually on the air on December 31, 2007 it is unfair to make a judgement IMO about just how close they come to their September 4, 2004 announcement regarding HD on DirecTV.

Until then it is pure speculation. I find it interesting how people 'outside' of DirecTV could be trying to 'temper' or correct information that is given out from the source (DirecTV) BEFORE the delivery date has arrived.

Problem is, it now seems like all the days are getting longer and longer, it still seems like a month or two away ....
Maybe it's because I have been working ever possible hour at work lately.

Sco,
I have heard it will be closer to the middle of Sept.

Harsh,
Many people on the boards are saying IF this happens and maybe , in reality, it was NOT D*'s fault at all that the sea based accuident happened, and pushed alot of other launches around.

Sco,
There will be plenty of people bashing D* on Jan 1 if a few channels are not up that were suppose to be up, it's an easy thing for the D* detractors to do this type of thing, others outside of D* subs are happy for the launch, tose are the ones that understand the more sats the better for the TV industry.

I really don't care who bashes who - not my problem. And no matter what any of these companies do, there are people that feel that something better should have been done anyhow.

I do find it ridiculous to say that they haven't met their committments - 6 months before the stated timeframe however.

I mean as another example - DISH now says they will launch 2 sats this year. First, I think thats great. But I will also tell you that if one of them can't be launched until February due to delay of some sort or another, I wouldn'f feel a need to bash them, most of this stuff is pretty far away from their control. I am satisfied that they have done their part in making the suitable arrangemenets.

Also, to me if the number of HD channels on DirecTV is 'ONLY' 80 at the end of the year, I am not in any way going to be upset. It seems to be the people that don't even have D* that are doing the bashing, and to me that is just opposite of reality. The people NOT AFFECTED are the ones yapping. I don't get it. To me going from about 16 HD channels now (including lils) to 80 or so will be amazing. And the knowledge that as more become avaialble they will be added. My world won't stop if the number is not 100.

I had DirecTV HD before they made known their future plans, I haven't stayed with them based on a magical number of new channels, I still KNOW that for sports buffs like me there is NO BETTER PROVIDER - and if there was, I would change ASAP.

I can't wait to see how Dish is going to launch 2 satellites in 6 months without a problem.Yea right!! I'm sure tables will be turned this time next year. What Dishnetworks launch date for their satellites? I guess if there were dates Dish fans would have something to post in their own form instead of ours.

Good I'll go to the Dish Form and start talking negative about their launch.

Go right ahead. I am in the wait and see boat. I will beleive it when they launch or are on the pad ready to launch.

So when does the new channels role out? Doesn't look like this year.Where would I find this info?

Dish does not need these SAT's to launch more HD stations. They are moving all the voom channels to mpeg4 to free up extra capacity.

Fortunately, we have certain benchmarks available that must be passed along the way, so it isn't pure speculation. Along the way, we had a news item or two of delivery by the marketroids that were widely known to be before the satellite launches.

To be accurate, DIRECTV didn't claim anything for the end of 2007 in their September EIGHT, 2004 release. Their claims were that S1 and S2 would launch in 2005 (whew!) and that D10 and D11 would launch in Early 2007 (woopsie).
