As I sit here contemplating this post, I wonder if I really might need therapy. I mean, FTA is an addictive hobby, but I think I might have taken things a bit far this morning... 9/10 of a mile TOO far. Where to begin? I guess I should begin at the beginning.
It all started seven hours ago. I was on my way home from a late night feast at Taco Bell. I was going to head home and get some work done on the computer. It was about 11:00 p.m. Central, and I was on the last leg of my trip home through the 'burbs. Then I saw it. What was it? IT was an eight-foot Paraclipse dish, abandoned for the trash along with piles of shrubbery (Confederate Jasmine vines, to be exact) and an old chain-link fence.
To give some background on this particular dish, I've had my eyes on it for a couple of years now. It was mounted in a backyard near the fence. I've watched as the vines took hold on the fence, then on the dish. From time to time, I've been tempted to ask the owner if I could have the dish, but never got around to it. Besides, I'm not very keen about knocking on a stranger's door and going through that whole process.
Well, tonight as I passed the house, I noticed the fence, vines, and DISH were GONE! I quickly looked around, and saw the pile of debris put out for the garbage. On came the brakes (actually, I had to go around the block and come back), and I parked, got out, and surveyed the situation. The dish was sandwiched in between vines and fence, a real mess to be sure. After about an hour of untangling and breaking vines and fence material, I got the dish out. Buttonhook was bent at a 90 degree angle. Mesh was in rather poor condition, both from the vines and from tearing the dish down. The dish frame itself was in good shape, no corrosion, and still very shiny
I made the decision that this dish was going to be saved.
I drove home (9/10 of a mile from where the dish was) to pick up some tools. Grabbed a socket set and a very large, high-torque adjustable wrench, and drove back. First thing I did was to remove the feedhorn/LNB assembly. Chaparral feedhorn with an Echostar 25 degree C-band LNB and polarotor. Nothing special, but I took that first. Next step was to remove the heavy part, which is, of course, the actuator assembly. I dreaded this, thinking the bolts would be rusted frozen. However, with a bit of effort, I managed to loosen one bolt with the high-torque wrench which allowed me to remove the entire actuator assembly. That went in the trunk of the car, along with the feedhorn.
Now for the dish itself. No way was this dish going to fit IN the car. I thought about on top, but I was worried about the weight (the thing was still very heavy) and the car paint job. I had my cell phone on me, and called friends with access to pickup trucks. Nobody awake. NO WAY am I going to let this dish go into the back of a garbage truck (not sure it would have fit anyway...) So I did the only thing I could do... drove home with the car, and walked back to the dish site on foot. The plan was to "roll" the dish home, staying on grass along the shoulder of the road wherever possible.
Walking back to the dish from home took about 20 minutes, no big deal. But the walk home would be much longer, much harder, and much more challenging. It was VERY hot and humid, as it always is down here. When I left home it was about 1:30 a.m.
When I got back to the dish, it was 10 till 2. I started rolling it down the street, one block at a time, stopping periodically to catch my breath. This thing was still very heavy, and it took elbow grease to keep it rolling straight. I kept running into low hanging trees, street signs, traffic signs, and street lights. In many cases, there was no grass, only concrete. I had to roll it across the concrete, which made WAY too much noise for that time of night, with people trying to sleep. Finally, I got it home. It was 2:30 a.m. Not bad. Then I noticed something. No standard mount! The mount for the dish was still back there, on the pole, and that had to be retrieved!
I grabbed the large wrench and drove back again, fearing the worse... that the bolts would be frozen to the pole, which I would never be able to pick up and put in the car (it probably weighed at least 500 pounds with the concrete). Fortunately, the bolts came loose rather easily, and I was able to put the mount into the trunk of my car. This mount is a square "tube", about four feet long, which bolts on over the pipe which is cemented into the ground. At the top of this square tube is an angled, pivoting mount that attaches to the actuator assembly. Without these parts, I would never be able to get the dish working properly.
Whew! Well, if you read this far, I hope it was an enjoyable little story. Now I've gotta get some sleep

Linuxman, thanks for the encouragement I did notice that the mesh is attached by simple wire clamps, so replacing it shouldn't be a problem. I will also, unfortunately, have to replace the buttonhook, since it was bent at a 90 degree angle and broke from metal fatigue. At least I have the correct measurements
Anole, I'm not sure how much they went for back in the day (they're no longer made, of course), but I've heard they were quite expensive and considered among the best of the BUDs. Some of the guys over in the C-band forum would probably know more specifics The Paraclipse dishes certainly LOOK nice, especially that frame.
Dragging it behind my car was an option I entertained, but I figured that would probably scrape the heck out of the dish. As it was, I scraped the edges noticeably by rolling it. Also, if I had gotten pulled over by the police, that would have been a moving violation I decided that keeping a vehicle out of the equation would be in my best interest. A wagon would have been nice, but I don't have one

They're really nice dishes. A 10' (or even 16') would be very cool. I'm going to have to get mine fixed up I'd have knocked on the door to get this one, but I find doing that somewhat awkward. Our DNS provider is encouraging us to enable DNSSEC on our domains for added security.
I have gone ahead and enabled it, and am told it may take anywhere from 90 minutes to 24 hours for it to take effect.
Hopefully doing this does not harm the site in any way. (It shouldn't) but if it does, you will then know why and I will revert the settings.
But from what I am reading it should be ok. so just giving a warning as I have screwed up DNS stuff in the past.

Due to security concerns and the fact that the Tapatalk Plugin for Xenforo is no longer being updated we have removed Tapatalk support from SatelliteGuys.
For those who were using it we recommend using our PWA App instead which is faster and does not have all the spam Tapatalk had. Below is a graphic showing how to add SatelliteGuys to your devices home screen. (While iOS is shown the process is mostly the same for Android.)

Actually, PWA stands for "Progressive Web Application" and is basically just saving a site's homepage to your desktop where it appears as an "App" with the rest of your smartphone's Apps.
A PWA is a custom version of SatelliteGuys which is optimized for mobile devices. While it may look like the website, its actually different so that only the files needed for mobile are sent, meaning its a much faster experience all around.
TapaTalk is essentially dead. It was written for PHP 5.4 and we are now running PHP 8.4. There have been a LOT of PHP security updates since then and since Tapatalk for Xenforo has not been updated in a long long time it is not the safest idea to keep running it.
In addition those trying to view the site on their mobile devices using a browser were getting spammed on the top of the screen for people to install TapaTalk, this ad in some cases would take up 20% of the users screen. We could get rid of that ad but we would have to pay $20 a month to get rid of it.
In addition TapaTalk could and was inserting their own ads on SatelliteGuys in the app which only benefitted them, SatelliteGuys was not paid for those ads they were displaying on our site. Again we could pay to get rid of those ads.
And here was the cost of the Premium Tier.
Now to make matters worse Tapatalk recently announced that they are going to start charging users of the app 99 cents a month to continue using it.
So soon you would be paying them each month to access SatelliteGuys via their app, again all the money going to them... and you would still see all their ads too.
Tapatalk was a great program which we run for many many years, and for a long time we DID pay for the premium tier. But now with such a small offset using it (My numbers show a total of 6 members) it wasn't work paying for any longer.
In addition Tapatalk was sold to a different owner who made lots of promises of improvements and updates but then that owner has been really radio silent since, instead they have been letting TapaTalk rot on the vine.
If you visit their support forum at https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tapatalksupport/ you will see there is not much going on, in fact most of the support questions posted there go unanswered.
Please give the PWA a try, I was a die hard Tapatalk user myself but now only use the PWA on devices. It is a much better all around experience, with no bloatware or additional ads based on your user membership level.
I don't have an android phone so I could not make a graphic showing you how to add SatelliteGuys PWA to your phones apps or home screen. But here is a site that explains how to do it on all kinds of devices. How to Install a PWA on iOS, Android, Windows & Mac [2025 Guide]
The above link also explains PWA's better as well.

As you may have noticed we are doing a Fund Raiser for SatelliteGuys!
As many of you know I have been paying for a majority of the operation of the site out of my own pocket for awhile now. Now looking at things we have a number of renewals coming up that I could use some help with. These renewals include the license renewal for our Forum Software, Renewal of a number of our add on's the site uses, renewal of domain names etc.
I have set a goal of $400.00 - any extra that comes in will just go to fund the operations of the site. None of the money will go to me (I tried BuyMeACoffee a few months ago, and they denied me saying they do not do business with Satellite Piracy sites... which we are not... hell we host the beta programs for both DISH and DIRECTV here...)

I planned on removing it today, but then my fathers car broke down and I had to drive him all around to get his stuff done. Then I had a doctors appointment after that which was annoying...
Dr asks me if I have had any changes, so I tell him something wrong with me that started a month or so ago and his reply back is, that it sucks to get old... I hate that. Why ask me. if your going to come back with a smart ass answer.
Anyays I hope to get rid of Tapatalk tomorrow.
And we had more people donate today, thank you! The extra money is going to future expenses since things like add ons don't expire at the same time.

I have added a new feature which is a work in progress called "Social Feed" which displays the forums Facebook style. Its nice for people who like that, but needs work. But i have been watching this one for awhile and the author is being really responsive to suggestions and adding them. So if you have any please let me know and I can pass them along.

I don't have an Android phone so I don't know if this will apply to the Brave settings on your android device but it works on the desktop for me.
Change this setting to either startup to a different website or a new tab page. I have mine set to open to google.com instead of where I left off and it doesn't ask me at the next startup if I want to open the last opened page unless it crashed.
