Advice Needed: Setting Up C-band Reception with a 90 cm Dish

Hi there,
I'm looking for guidance on setting up C-band reception using a 90 cm satellite dish. Here are the details of my current setup and what assistance I need:

  • Current Setup:
    • I have a 90 cm satellite dish.
    • Location: Toronto, Canada.
Specific Questions:
  1. C-band LNB Recommendation: Could anyone recommend a suitable C-band LNB that would work effectively with a 90 cm dish? I'm particularly interested in receiving signals from Intelsat 21(Intelsat 21 at 58.0°W - LyngSat Maps) at 58W.
  2. Where to Purchase Equipment: I'm looking for reliable sources—online or local suppliers—that offer C-band LNBs and other necessary accessories for satellite dish setups. Preferably places that cater to customers in Canada.
  3. Installation Tips: Any tips or recommendations on aligning the dish, optimizing signal strength, or dealing with potential interference in an urban setting like Toronto?

Im trying to recieve KCTV (Korea Central TV) from North Korea for archival purposes. It isnt archived properly anywhere and any a general lack of *public* non paywalled content without frequent outages available

The absolute smallest C-band antenna that's worth bothering with, is one at least 7.5 feet in size, and very well tuned. Even then, that size will only be good for maybe 90% of what's out there. Pretty much should lock any signal DVB-S2 8psk and below, if you are in the beam reception area. Unlikely to work at 16psk and above, but luckily anything up there in that range is still fairly rare.

Hi Marc, I think we have corresponded before!

I've been receiving KCTV from Intelsat 21 since 2016. My main dish has been a 2.4m dish and the signal strength is sufficient. A 90cm dish will struggle on KCTV. The signal is not very strong and there isn't much error correction on it. You will possibly receive the NHK transponder because of the generous error correction, but probably little else.

Earlier this year I had to upgrade to a 3m dish due to 5G interference. I'm not sure if Canada has reallocated C-band spectrum to 5G as the US has done, but it meant constant break up on the 2.4m dish. The 3m dish is larger and gathers enough signal to once again provide stable reception of anything above 4GHz.

Here's the difference between the dishes.

A 90cm dish has an area of 6,362 cm².
A 2.4m dish has an area of 45,239 cm²
A 3m dish has an area of 70,686 cm²

So, a 90cm dish has less than 10 percent of the surface area of a 3m dish to collect the signal, it's a huge difference.

You can buy an LNB from Titanium Satellite that includes 5G filter. If the dish is designed for C-band, which is unlikely at that size, you can fit it and have a try. If it's an offset dish for ku-band, you'll need to find C-band adapters and almost certainly will not succeed.

It is sometimes possible to find people giving away old C-band dishes, and that is how I got all of mine. But you still need someplace to put it.

Sorry it's not better news.

Probably not available from other sources. When I was in Halifax a few years ago, I tried very hard to receive 58W using a 4-foot dish. Over a period of years, I never succeeded in receiving any transponders from that satellite. Though the footprint is supposed to be 4 dB lower there than in Toronto according to satstar.net.

The difficulty in predicting reception without trying is that besides the actual signal strength, when using a small dish for C you must consider adjacent satellite interference. The beamwidth of a small dish is broader than 2 degrees at these frequencies so you receive adjacent satellites simultaneously even if pointed perfectly at the target satellite. You also don't know the power the broadcaster uses for this particular transponder.

There are others like executive in Ontario with small dish experience. And JFOK wrote a good thread about chasing 58W with an 8-foot dish. Martyn on the east coast has received this transponder in past I believe.

excellent explanation! I also think the only thing a 90 cm dish might be able to receive on 58W C-band is the NHK transponder

KCTV requires 9.5 dB and I think even a 6-ft/1.80m dish would not be sufficient

I've liked Most of them once we've gotten past the 1st 3-4, getting to know who was who took a bit in the beginning.
It's a bit harder seeing we already Know the person, then go back and see how they became that person.

Anyone else watch this show? Any guesses as to what was in the box Gibbs gave to Abby that was on her desk? It look liked it was glowing.

OTHER  Mini Multiswitch

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.

No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

Hughesnet cancelling email addresses

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Site is slooooow

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

I rebooted my MacBook Air and it's zipping right along. Sorry, but it was taking over 20 seconds to load pages, with the pulsing blue bars so it was munching on something.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.
