What does this mean?
Preseumably, the same thing Elon Musk means when he talks about direct satellite to cellphone connection. If they can make that as inexpensive as existing cell services, and it works basically anywhere with a view to the sky, why does anyone need to pay money to VZW, TMO or ATT anymore.

Won't work with cell phones ..to much delay...but it would be a great internet service..

D2D - Direct to Device, and Constellation - a swarm of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to reduce connection latency. So, what, this would be yet another Starlink competitor, like Kuiper (Amazon) or Telesat? Kuiper currently needs Vulcan to fly its satellites, but at a much higher cost per launch on the (currently) expendable ULA rocket. Maybe ULA cuts them a break since Blue Origin is providing the BE4 engines for Vulcan before New Glenn starts flying.

EchoStar would need to contract with SpaceX, ULA, or the ESA to get this new constellation off the ground. I just cannot see that happening anytime soon. The Russian and Chinese rockets are off the table for the near-future.

The only time I've experienced echo was on a undersea cable to Alaska.

It seems theoretically impossible for a digital conversation to echo as resent packets would be rejected.

The article mentions the lack of echo in terrestrial calls due to the short distance, and the echo in satellite calls due to the long ~36,000 km (~22370 miles) distance. Using the Starlink sats though, the round trip distance is only ~680 miles, about the same as a long day trip by car.

Or Amazon Blue Origin
Fixed it for you… Since New Shepherd is not capable of launching payloads into orbit, that won't fly for putting up a LEO D2D Constellation. New Glenn has yet to get beyond the test article stage, although the BE4 engines have now flown two missions, so all Blue Origin needs to do is build propellant tanks, guidance hardware, thrust gimbals, etc., and demonstrate that they are a viable player in the American launch providers.

Of course, if the EchoStar D2D satellite was light enough, I suppose Rocket Lab would love to demonstrate their reusable Electron capabilities. I think all they've managed to to reuse is an engine or two; no booster has made a second flight. They may be focusing on Neutron for its designed reusability instead. But they're another low-cost LEO orbit launch system.

I wonder if E* is looking at buying bulk service from the LEO sat services similar to the way MVNO's operate rather than launching their own LEO sats. Of course Starlink is the only viable LEO service currently.

Kinda sounds like Charlie's plan

Is Project Kuiper part of Blue Origin?
No. Project Kuiper is an Amazon initiative, part of the same Devices and Services division responsible for Kindle, Echo, Fire TV, eero, Ring, and other tech devices. Blue Origin is a separate company founded by Jeff Bezos.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
