2008 Pennant Races

I wouldn't think it's that big a difference because even if the Sox open on the road against the Angels, the Sox OWN the Angels in the playoffs so I don't think it would be that big a deal. If the Red Sox beat the Angels, than, I think, the Sox will coast to the World Series.

Point taken but three things:

1. The Angels owned the Red Sox this year, winning the season series 8-1

2. IMO, the Angels are the best team in baseball this year

3. I don't care who I'm playing, I'd much rather play at home (especially vs. flying across the country).

The Rays beat the Red Sox, 2-1 to take a 1 game lead in the AL East. The two teams conclude their series tomorrow night.

As a Red Sox fan I have to give all the credit in the world to the Rays. Here's a team with a $45 million payroll, and they have met every challenge that's been put in front of them so far this year.

The Yankees and Blue Jays both lost tonight...........................both teams elimination number is down to 3 in both the AL East and wildcard.

Hard to believe the Yankees are this close to being shut out of October.

The last time they weren't in the playoffs, CBS was still televising Major League Baseball.

That's right, 1993 was the last time MLB had a postseason without the Yankees.

My preseason World Series pick, Detroit Tigers, have been officially eliminated from postseason contention tonight.

My goodness, the Mets lost to the Nationals again! They're now in a tie with the Phillies, pending the Phils game with the Braves (Phils ahead, 8-7 Bottom of 9th).

yeah, don't remind me. Unbelievable. I think the SNY text poll said it all. Bill, I don't know if you get SNY but their text poll said: How will the Mets end up?

A. Win Division Title
B. Win Wild Card
C. Miss the Playoffs

the winner was C. Miss the Playoffs with if I could remember, 56%. Wow!! It's getting tighter and tighter and I sweat more and more.

Phillies win and they take over first place in the NL East. And don't look now, but those pesky Marlins have won 6 in a row and are now 5.5 games out (unfortunately, probably too much to make up at this point). The current NL East standings:

PHI...............84-67.....................-
NYM..............83-67....................0.5
FLA...............78-72....................5.5

Should both New York team miss the playoffs, lord only knows how much TBS and Fox will be crying without the huge market.

The Yankees are DONE and the Mets... I don't trust them.

Mets,
I don't blame you for being upset, but you're still in the wildcard lead, and the teams behind you are struggling even more than the Mets right now.

OTOH, if the four NL playoff teams are the Phillies, Mets, Cubs, and Dodgers, TBS will be doing cartwheels.

The Cubs beat the Brewers tonight, 5-4. For the first time in several weeks, the Brew Crew are on the outside looking in for a playoff spot as they fall behind the Mets.

The Brewers are 3-12 in their last 15 games and C.C. Sabathia lost his first game in a Brewers uniform.

With the win the Cubs magic number to clinch the NL Central is down to 4. The Cardinals have been officially eliminated from the Central race (they are still alive for the wildcard).

Current NL wildcard standings:

NYM......................83-67....................-
MIL.......................83-68...................0.5
HOU.....................80-70....................3
FLA......................78-72.....................5
STL......................78-72.....................5

I find it hard to believe that the Nationals, for once, shutout the opponent.

I guess even the awful teams can play the spoiler- OTOH, the Mariners haven't seized their opportunity.

IMO, the Yankees' supbar season could scare away some potential free-agents. (I see Sabathia maybe going to the Angels, Dodgers, or D-Backs)

Twins keep blowing their chances- they seem jinxed against the Indians, as we saw last year and this year.

Yup, Indians beat the Twins. Minny now 2.5 games behind the White Sox.

Also, with the Twins loss, the Rays AND Red Sox magic number is down to 5 to clinch a playoff berth.

Twins and W. Sox have a three games series coming up real soon, that should go a long ways to deciding things in the AL Central.
1 left with Cleveland, 4 with TB and 3 with KC to end the season, so the Twins have a tough schedule to close out the season.

The W. Sox have 2 more games with the Yankees, 3 with KC, 3 with the Twins and 3 with Cleveland.

Both teams have to deal with Cleveland, thou Twins last game is today, and KC
KC normally has something to say about the end of the year for teams vying for the playoffs.

Who do you guy's give the edge to looking at the last week of the season ?
