2009 British Open

Just because Tiger's not in contention doesn't mean it ruins the entire event.

That's like saying the NFL playoffs would have been less interesting without the Patriots, Packers, and Cowboys.

Why should the other golfers be blamed for something THEY didn't do?
Because Tiger is the gold standard in golf. It would be nice if he had a few challengers, but he doesn't. Everyone else, save for Mickleson who isn't playing, is basically a one hit wonder. BORING. So all that's left is Tom Watson and a bunch of guys we've never heard of and will probably never hear from again. Seriously, it's like watching the NFL when they went on strike and used scab players.

OTOH, if we're lucky maybe someone will pull another Van de Velde and choke in grand fashion.

Yea its just like saying lebron and or garnet not making the Finals, its not the rest of the players fault who did make the NBA FINALS.. LOL

- "The" Open. That is the name of the tournament. The long form is "The Open Championship, as determined by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews". The same for the "Amateur Championship". Americans, alone in the world, insist on calling these the "British Open" and "British Amateur". Its is just as wrong as Euros who insist on calling The Masters, "The US Masters".

- Almost every * State U is correctly "The * State U". Outlaw Staters will argue you until they explode that their school is unique in this respect, when it is not.

- Woods. Watching golf without Woods is just so much more enjoyable. Then networks, all of them, focus on him 40% of the time, even when he is 5 or more shots out, and 95% of the time if he is close. Its just not the way golf was covered before. DirecTV should have a "Traditional" channel in its multiplex and just cover the golf based on the current scores of the players, like they will this weekend, and not this guy.

- Equipment. Leaving out steroids, golf and tennis went in one direction, and baseball went in the other, when technology came in. In some alternate universe, it would be interesting to see a golf and a tennis that kept iron irons, wood woods, and so on. The "hit it really far and then use a recovery club" strategy of Woods and most of the pros of his generation would not be the standard there.

- Another reason to love golf, especially majors golf, and most especially The Masters and The Open Championship is where are the ads, other than on the players and then mostly only for golf equipment? There are not any. Golfers don't try to squeeze every penny out of a sport and make it a maze of commercialism.

Day 3 Thoughts

-Tiger went +7 on a stretch of 6 holes on Friday en route to missing the cut. That had to be the worst stretch of golf Tiger has EVER played since turning Pro. Normally, when he goes astray off the tee, he makes a miraculous 2nd or 3rd shot to somehow recover. That didn't happen this week. He just didn't looked focused at all during this Tourney.

-Sure Tiger and Phil won't be playing, but to slight the other 70 golfers still playing is an insult to this wonderful game. Tiger's exit just proves how challenging the game actually is.

-The story to follow this weekend will most likely be the soon to be 60-year-old, Tom Watson who last won The Open 30 years ago on this very Course at Turnberry. Tom's looking to rewrite history.

-Also of note, John Daly is still in it! With everything Big John has battled throughout his career off the course, just competing on the final day will be of note for him.

-The defending Champ, Padraig Harrington is most likely out of it. He is at +9 after 16 on Day 3. We will have a new winner of The Open for the first time in 3 years.

-What about Sergio Garcia? The #5 Golfer in the World is 4 stokes off the lead. Can he get his long sought after first Major win? He finished runner up in The 2007 Open Championship.

-More than anything though, instead of focusing on any one golfer, I'll be able to just enjoy the game this weekend. This is the oldest tournament in Golf, played in the land where Golf was created. This is a weekend to root for the game. Go Golf!

You do realize that 73 players are competing in The Open today and none of them are named Tiger Woods don't you? ;)

As far as Tiger Woods being the "gold standard"...I will agree, but "things" are changing and there is plenty of up-and-coming young talent on the tour.

Ladies and Gentlemen, what we witnessed after 36 holes was remarkable. What we are now witnessing after 54 holes is SPECIAL!

Tom Watson is 18 holes away from his 6th Claret Jug and 9th Major Championship Win! With a 9th Major Win, he would tie Ben Hogan on the All-Time list, just behind Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Walter Hagen. But that's not the story here....

The story is that Tom Watson has the chance to become the oldest player to ever win The Open. The previous title goes to "Old" Tom Morris who won The Open Championship in 1867 at the age of 47. A record of 141 years has the chance to be broken tomorrow!

Wow! I can't wait for tomorrow morning. Tiger or no Tiger......

It also underscores my point. Even at age 59 Watson is better than everyone else on tour not named Tiger. Who else has at least 8 major wins?

Jack (18), Tiger (14), Hagen (11), Player (9) and Hogan (9). The only one with 8 is Watson.

And this tournament is a special one. It requires extreme discipline. It requires you to hit it in the fairway. Doing anything else and you will be punished. It also requires you to be an excellent putter, which Watson has proved to be. This links type course helps the finesse player and right now, it's Watson's to lose.

I meant among active players. Tiger missing the cut should have been the opportunity of a lifetime for guys in their prime. Instead they are getting beat by a guy who had his hip replaced last year. They ought to just rename it the TGA, Tiger Golf Association.

Wow! The course, wind, and cold are taking their toll this morning. With just a few exceptions the course is claiming victims this morning. Fisher had a 2-shot lead early, but he drove one out of the fairway and wound up with a quadruple-bogey. Currently Watson is tied for the lead with a 21-year old English chap named C. Wood (not to be confused with T. Woods) at two under par. This is shaping up to a great finish!

This is just amazing! No other words can describe what it would be for a 59 year old to win a major on the PGA tour.
