The US Open begins tomorrow in New York. Here's the lowdown.

Dates: 8/31-9/13

Location: Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center, Flushing Meadow, NY

Surface: Hard Courts

TV: Tennis Channel, ESPN2, CBS

Defending Champions: Men - Roger Federer 5 x's
Women - Serena Williams

Headlines: Roger Federer returns, after winning the French Open and Wimbledon, looking for his 6th straight Open title. Andy Roddick comes in after his epic effort in the Wimbledon final looking to win the only major he has won for a 2nd time. Andy Murray was the runner up last year, and Rafael Nadal is back from the knee injury that kept him out of Wimbledon.

Serena Williams comes in looking for her 2nd straight major title after Wimbledon. Venus Williams is on the same side of the draw as Serena so there will be no Williams sister final. Dinara Safina is still ranked #1, but has gotten beaten badly in the last 3 majors, and has never won a major. Maria Sharpaova is back after missing last year's Open with a shoulder injury, and former champion Kim Clijsters is back after a 2 year retirement.

Day 3 is in the Books

Last night, I watched Federer beat Simon Greul of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 before a night session-record crowd of 24,206. (Day 3)

On Tuesday (Day 2), I watched Sharapova toy with Pironkova.

Also, for those who didn't see it, Nadal returned to beat Richard Gasquet. Yesterday was Nadal's first match at a major tournament since he was upset in the fourth round of the French Open on May 31. Gasquet, a former top 10 player recently came off a 2½-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine.

17 year old qualifier Melanie Oudin, from Marietta, GA, takes out 4 seed Elena Dementieva to advance to the 3rd round. She could face Sharapova next. :up

And the world's most overrated played #1 Dinara Safina won today in spite of 15 double faults. Maybe she should just try serving underhand.

Another American qualifier, Jesse Witten, who was a former All American at Kentucky, is through to the 3rd round, and he could face 5 seed Novak Djokovic next.

5 seed Jelena Jankovic, who was the runner up last year, is eliminated. The women's draw is wide open now.

Oudin did it again! :up The 17 year old knocked off Sharapova in 3 sets. It wasn't pretty, Sharapova had 21 double faults , but Oudin is turning into a giant killer. Could be the next star in the making.

The world's most overrated player, Dinara Safina, loses in a 3rd set tiebreak to a complete nobody. Way to represent. And James Blake goes out without much of a fight. These two would make a good mixed doubles team.

Not surprised- we get it. You hate her.

What did she ever do to you?
She's an emabarassment to the game. When you're #1 you ought act like you're good. I saw more guts out of a 17 year old than out of the top ranked player.

Kim Clijsters knocks off Venus Williams to advance to the quarterfinals. Only in women's tennis can you be retired for 2 years and comeback and reach a grand slam quarterfinal. Nice win today though. Venus is definitely no slouch.

I'm not even going to watch the rest of the Women's side of the bracket- not interested in seeing another Williams victory. Tennis is boring when Venus and Serena always win.
