Yes, I got my 622 activated by Dish before the Install, but here is the problem....
I ordered my 622 with the standard install.
It arrived a few days before my scheduled install date.
Being a normal "guy" type, I didn't want to wait until the install date to give it a try. I already have a 921, so I had 2 feeds from my legacy SW64 running to the receiver location.
I hooked up the 622 and powered it up. I went through all of the standard switch stuff and the box downloaded the software. Voila.. I had a working, but not activated, receiver.
Not being one to let a little CSR roulette slow me down, I called Dish to see who I would have to talk into digging deep into the bowels of their computer to give me the precious permission to activate the 622.
A sweet voice answered, I gave her the obligatory information. I told her that I would like to activate the receiver and wanted to make sure that I didn't screw-up my upcoming install date.
"One moment please," she said as I heard her keyboard clicking in the background. Within a minute or two she said that she had activated the receiver. She also confirmed my install date and made a note that I want to keep my 61.5 dish and need an DPP 44 to make it all work.
Way cool, I thought, finally someone who knows what she is doing!
But wait, this IS DISH. I waited for a couple of minutes, but it seemed like an hour until the red lights disappeared on my guide.
Way cool, I thought, But wait this IS DISH. I programmed my locals, all digital and most pumping out HD shows. I brought them up on the screen. Geee, it thought, they sure don't look as crisp as they did on the 921. I then checked my settings and decided to see how the picture compared to my Voom channels.... Voom Channels, where are the Voom channels? For that matter where are all of my HD channels? There they are.... All still locked out and in "red" on the program guide.
I then waited about 15 or 20 nanoseconds and made a call back to Dish. The new CSR wasn't sure, but kicked me up to a HD Specialist.
Hummm she said. The other CSR shouldn't have activated your receiver. After a bit of prompting she explained why...
"When she activated the receiver she opened your installation ticket. Due to a glitch in our system, that immediately cancelled your old HD package. The new HD package won't be activated until your dish is installed and the technician closes the ticket. I'm sorry, there is nothing I can do except have you to wait for your installation."
In other words, by activating my 622 they deleted my HD package. My new Platinum package won't be activated until the ticket is closed. I assume that I could have had her close the ticket, but I would be risking the loss of the Dish 1000, switches and a delightful afternoon with a Dish Service Technician.
The moral of the story is "A Dish 1000 in the hand is worth more than a 622 out of the box."
Overall, my install is tomorrow & I've only lost a couple of days of HD . It really isn't that big of a deal. Things should go as silk, since the receiver already works. But wait a minute, this IS DISH...
