If I have a bad hard drive how would I know and would reciever work without hdrive or broken harddrive

I have been playing with it power off and on I get this error message
"Problem with storage device"
does anybody have any idea
thanks

The DVR won't work with a bad hard drive in it.

You can connect an external hard drive to the eSATA port if you have one laying around.
or
Call DIRECTV and tell them what's going on so you can get a new DVR sent out to you.

You can do a drive scan, do a restart, when almost done screen comes up after reboot, hold down the down arrow and the record button on the front of the receiver until the scanning dialog appears.
