So...since DirecTV and Viacom are in this big dispute, does that mean I can cancel my two year contract with DirecTV? Since DirecTV isn't providing me the channels I pay for each month, does that mean they're in breach of contract and I can cancel the contract? I've been looking for a reason to get out and take my business somewhere else.

Nope. If you read your contract there is a stipulation that says DirecTV can change programming at any time.

You can't get out of contract unless you pay the ETF to get out of it :)

Anyway basicly yep you have to pay ETF to get out of your contract. I would wait it out before making any major moves, Try Netflix or Amazon Prime for the time being. Viacom will be back on Directv, they both have alot to lose by this dispute.

Problem is, cancelling for free and moving doesn't protect you from the potential of your next provider dropping channels. The landscape has changed, channel drops in pissing matches are common place, and no provider is safe. Granted some may have a better track record than others, but it is what it is.

every time there is a programming dispute this question comes up.A week or so later someone insists he thinks a class action suit could be successful. Sorry but there is no breach here.

Didn't VIACOM pull their programming off the web?

And for the OP, D* has a MUCH better track record overall of KEEPING these channels when contract time comes around than some others.

If you don't like what Directv is doing you are free to cancel at any time. The big question is at what price? Contracts are NOT written for the consumer.

Only off their own site. The subscriptions like Netflix and Amazon prime remain. Netflix currently carrys 38 different Nick shows and Cartoons. Sponge Bob has 99 episodes on netflix currently.

Do not ever think you can get ahead of wireless phone and small dish companies. They hire teams of lawyers to write contracts to trap you.
