FBI's facial recognition database will contain 52 million images by 2015

I am surprised it is so small... I would think they would have all the driver's license photos in it. But, I suppose that was a job for the NSA.

Along similar lines, our local Police Department just announced they are deploying an HD camera system in squad cars that will capture and analyze license plates on vehicles that the cars comes across during patrol. If a plate is tagged as high interest, the officer is alerted and verifies the plate before taking appropriate action. Sounds good in practice until they said all the images of scanned license plates will be kept, along with the GPS location, date, and time of the scan. This database will be kept for up to 18 months. Even if the police have no interest in your license plate at the time, this plate DB could be used after a crime to determine if a suspect was in a particular area at a given time.
