I am thinking about a four satellite solution for three boxes. Can you combine the output of an SW64 seeing three satellites with the output of a legacy quad only seeing one with an SW21? Or is there a more elegant way to do this? I only have legacy equipment.

Yes, but is sometimes not the most stable on some receivers. This webiste had diagrams of how best to do this. It requires 50 checks on your "Check Switch" test, so it will take a while to do. You may only be able to do this easily on two receivers. I'm not to sure about to get three or more receivers.
