Let's say TurboHD packages are done away with. I assume they will allow current Turbos to stay with their packages and grandfather them in.

1. So how does grandfathering work? No price increases for the Turbo part of the bill?

2. Also, if it goes that way, should I upgrade from TurboHDSilver to TurboHDGold before this happens? (Let's say in August) to get a better package? maybe add Platinum?

Thanks for the feedback.:up

I have been getting DishHD later call AboluteHD which is the same as todays TurboHD Gold plus Platinum for $29.99 for the past year and a half.

Normally grandfathered packages do not change pricing but it has happened. You probably wont get any new channels as they (Dish) would want you to get off of the older package

With grandfathered packages you are basically at the mercy of Dish.

In the past such packages have typically not had any price increases. Such packages have even had new channels added to them.

If you are happy with your current package, then you may as well hold on to the package as long as you can.

Again though, like the rest of us, you are the mercy of Dish and hence they can increase your package costs, not add new channels, remove channels, force you to another package, or any combination.

Worst case scenario is they force you into a current package and pay the current rates.

And they force you to change to Directv.

Once DirecTV picks up the locals for Albany, Ga their service will be an option for me. Till then its either pricey Mediacom where you swap out your HD DVR Receiver every two weeks for a semi working one or stay with Dish and visit SatGuys daily to keep up with what is going on. Which I admit I enjoy doing!

I've been subscribing to HD Absolute since May of last year. My bill has gone up about $2 over that time. For HD Absolute, HBO, locals and the ViP722 receiver/DVR I started out paying just under $56 per month. Now the price is at just under $58 per month. It's still not a bad deal at all and quite a bit less than what TurboHD customers are paying.

I think TurboHD customers are getting ripped off big time. If I was a TurboHD customer I would be paying close to $80 per month for the same channels.

They are not necessarily getting ripped off. If you look at it like you are an early adopter, and are getting an advantageous deal for the same channels, because you jumped first. For once being an early adopter saved money instead of paying more...........

BUT... the TurboHD packages allow RSNs and the HD Absolute didn't/doesn't. For some folks that was a big deal that got them to switch to an over priced TurboHD package only to see Dish cut them off at the knees by not adding new channels :(

FWIW I think the HD Absolute was (and is) the best value package Dish has offered in recent memory. I'm not a sports voyeur; so the lack of RSNs was/is no big deal for me.

I just hope the grandfathered HD Absolute package lives a very long and happy life ;)

Channel selection

It's a hard balance for me. My two teenage sons are right there in the middle. They like the sports HD channels like me, but Nick is missed. They enjoy the science HD in TurboHD Silver right now, but Gold has more and we're missing out on some in the Classic Silver. The price is better than Classic Silver but is it worth it? I guess I have to look at the Gold channels and really think about it, and see what new HD channels they add this August to the Turbo Silver.

They are not necessarily getting ripped off.
!protestBS!
They got the biggest price hikes by FAR, and yet only got a few of the (many) new HD channels -- despite being promised much more. In fact, I think AbsoluteHD got all the new HD channels (that TurboHD got) plus a few others that were added to Platinum without any price change. If you think TurboHD subs aren't getting ripped off then you are in denial.

Well, if there's anyone that knows BS, it's you, sir. :hatsoff:

BTW, I'm an Absolute sub, and we got the same new channels as Turbo, not more. We also did not get all of the new HD channels added to our package.

I corrected my post. I was under the impression AbsoluteHD also got one of the new Platinum HD channels. I fully understand how AbsoluteHD subs are still happy (because they are getting a great deal) but I don't understand how anyone can think a TurboHD sub who's package went up $10/month for just three new channels -- that AbsoluteHD got for free -- (when they should have gotten 8+ more new HD channels) isn't getting screwed. Would you still be as happy if DISH had raised the price of your Absolute HD package $10? Maybe you don't want TurboHD subs raising a ruckus because you're afraid DISH might take a closer look at all their HD-only packages (including AbsoluteHD) and you might loose your sweet deal?

That's wrong; you got more; you got all of the new platinum channels, which turbo subs would have to pay extra for.

Oh, you mean those non-HD channels that aren't in my guide?(not missing much there) Platinum channels are a part of the Absolute pkg, they are not a part of the Turbo Package, so they lost nothing if they didn't have access to Platinum in the first place.

Absolute and Turbo are two different packages. If the Turbo folk wanted Absolute, they should have purchased it before it went away. You can complain about the price increase difference, but not the channel difference.

Well, you can complain about anything, the validity of that complaint is another thing.............

But from a Turbo Gold perspective, I am paying $10 more for 3 channels I think... An absolute sub paid $0 more, and gained net 6 channels (even if some of them suck)... So I think you can argue price and channel count; it is substantial enough, to me at least
