Why on earth does the hopper have to reboot every freaking night :facepalm? what is it doing i don't see anything different in the menu's :facepalm i am sure it's not installing security patches every night... who would hack em in todays world. i read the hopper is making sure that my bill is paid when doing a reboot?

In earlier years receiver SW was rather buggy and would slowly eat up its memory space and slowly start acting weird. A reboot solves this as a crude method to reclaim the memory space. Disk never seemed to be able to solve these memory bugs. Instead, that's when Dish started having auto-reboots every night to "fix" this issue as a lazy lame workaround. It has stuck in all SW versions ever since. I don't know if this memory reboot fix is still necessary. However, Disk has also always used the nightly reboot to refresh the guide info which it's likely why it still exists.

If the reboot time is inconvenient, there is a setting that you can change to be a more unintrusive time.

Allegedly, it's doing a reboot to check for updates and download an updated program guide

it does updates checks during the reboots? I mean when use to hit check for updates it would reboot box, now it just tells you if there update and if there and one if accepted it it reboots and does it thing.

Though one can Change reboot time on hopper 3, I have had mine changed to time when no one is awake

Primarily it updates the program guide since at midnight you just lost today and it has to download a new one to stretch it back out to nine days again

But that shouldn't require a full restart. I think they mainly do it to keep them from building up errors and slowness.
At one point during the 501 days, they became so unstable that a manual reboot was the only "fix". It became normal to do a manual reboot when you first turned the receiver in the morning. In fact, for a period, CSRs recommend daily manual reboots to get around the issue. It was soon after that that Dish had the receiver SW do automatic daily reboots as a quicky work-round.

As I said earlier, I don't know if the reboot fix is still need for the current SW, but the daily reboot became a convenient means for Dish to update the guide info and SW updates. So the daily reboot has stuck ever since.

This is a good example of a SW "feature" that just evolved instead of was designed.

Sounds like early Windows versions.

I want to say this started with the 721 which was buggy beyond belief and a nightly reboot helped things.

HUH?

I had no complaints about each of the five or so 721s that went thru my home. Power supplies were troublesome but I had no other complaints.

To be honest every DVR I have had with DISH from the 7100/7200 WebTV/DISH player, and even the 811 HD receiver, required a reboot due to bugs and software problems. I used to say we were all beta testers if you had DISH. I think DISH just added it in to a daily reboot to keep some of the problems down and it just became standard for clearing them out and then update the guide too. House Keeping so to speak.

As a former owner of the 921 I believe it actually was the 921
I had both receivers and the 721 used to crap out all the time when the hard drive failed. I know because we had 3 of them back then and the one for my boy that was a toddler would go out and he would cry because all his kid shows stored on it would be gone. The 921 also was a nightmare at times. I kept it on a surge protector with a switch and turn it on and off to do power cord reboot.
