Pqapelbon is still a blown save waiting to happen. He is a closer without an "out pitch"
Last night, Billy Wagner came in with a four run lead and pitched a perfect seventh, and then Okajima gave up four hits and a walk to the five batters he faced, allowing two runs and leaving the bases loaded, no out.
Papelbon came in and was only able to wriggle out of it because Jacoby Ellsbury made a highlight film diving catch and somehow the dumb baserunner on third didn't even score on that flyball out.
A couple of weeks ago, there was a graphic on Papelbon on ESPN saying something like he had pitched with the bases loaded eight times this year and struck out the side in seven of them and was unscored upon in those innings, but I bet he has let more inherited runners score than the average closer has this year. He gets some saves by coming in with a three run lead and two men on and letting the two inherited runners score. He will be come a starter very soon. In fact, if Billy Wagner had agreed to allow his option to be picked up, Papelbon would have been a certainty to be converted into a starter next spring, and if they can buy a proven closer in the off-season, or if Bard comes into his own this month and in the playoffs, that will still happen.
