First of all, I don't do hacking and my receivers contain only factory bins.

I turned my dish yesterday to 148 west to pick up a few free stations on there, but they were black. So I rescanned that satellite in with my Sonicview 8000 HD

I had a friend over for a beer and we were just seeing what might pop up,.

Well this "pirate tv" station popped up and the announcer stated that the only reason I could pick up that station was because , he claimed, I had a receiver with an illegal modification designed to steal Dish Network signals.

I am really cheesed about this. My friend now wonders if I am stealing signals. I do not appreciate it , at all and am contemplating taking a hard legal step. I don't like being libelled by anyonne.

Its the same video they did a few years ago except this time they forgot to scramble it

I laugh when I see it. We had a thread on it a while back

I was not watching it alone, and didn't see the humor in it

They didn't forget anything. They have been out to kill true FTA for years. They want to be the only game in town. I'm cheesed and AM CONSIDERING OPTIONS

they just want to be sure it reaches every hacker, regardless if they are using a current pirate bin.

That is a true fta channel. Its on almost all echo sats. Prove to your buddy it's legal and show him the "dollar sign" indicator is off, then roll to one that is scrambled.

breath,,,it helps

The only option you have is, DON"T WATCH IT! If a commercial for Preparation H comes on tv, should I be offended and sue them because I don't have hemmrhoids? Find something better to be pissed off about. Try inflation, the recession or even the war in Iraq.

I don't follow this hard legal step part... It sure looks like a misunderstanding.

Is there some way you could tell the announcer was talking about you?

Did they mention you by name?

FTA, as opposed to True FTA, as opposed to False FTA...

What do you mean by "true" FTA?

Lone Cloud you are not a....lone. I see your point too. Like Iceberg said they should scramble it. I do not think they , DN, are trying to kill true FTA, though. The hackers and their dealers are the ones that have distorted the view that the average joe and maria have about FTA.

As per taking legal action , well , US of A is a free Country and very much the same way that a killer goes out in a rampant killing spree on any mall or school in your country , you are also free to sue anyone for anything, anytime. Your call.

I agree with LoneCloud. It is very offensive if Dishnet puts up channels in the clear, and then calls you a pirate for watching them. Dish IS trying to kill the whole FTA business. If Dish really wanted to secure their signal, the switch to 8PSK was a good opportunity for them to switch to an encoding method that was NOT DVB compatible. (Like DirecTV and DigiCipher seem to have done with no problem).

Putting up a stink is only going to get the few interesting ITC channels scrambled.

Bingo! This is the only result any kind of attempt to "do something about it" can possibly have. Sure you can attempt to sue them perhaps if you find a laywer dumb enough to take your case, but in the end the judge will likely laugh you out of his court room. You see in this hobby we're often times receiving signals that aren't intended for us. In this case the "intended audience" is pirates. Now the fact that the signal isn't encrypted makes it fair game and means we aren't breaking any laws by receiving it, but it doesn't give us the right to complain if we don't like it.

unencrypted

I think the gist of the matter is you haven't seen that channel before and couldn't explain to your buddy what it was.

Plus I think your buddy was busting your chops, and you take stuff too serious

What do you think he means? He's drawing a distinction between REAL FTA and what the pirates refer to as "FTA" but unless you're dim as a burnt out Christmas light, you already knew that.

:rant::rant::rant::rant:

I'm also drawing a distinction. When pirates use euphemisms and people react by adding terms like "true" and "real", they can legitimize pirates co-opting of the term FTA.

What I think he means is speculation and irrelevant.

I asked him what he meant and he answered. :up

Have a nice day.

Then why are you calling them pirates and legitimizing their co-opting of the term? Or hackers for that matter? Both terms were in use long before they were misapplied to people that steal or break into things illegally.

No use being pedantic about the distinction of one term while ignoring it in another.

I don't think your friend should be upset. You were not able to get premium channels like HBO, Showtime,Sports, PPV, porn, internationals, etc. which is what a hacker would get. You got common off the air channels like ION, NASA, Promo channels, therefore he should not think you were hacking.
All non-Echostar receivers will get that message. If you guys were having a beer, I guess your friend and yourself should also be mature enough to understand the situation when you point to a subscribed satellite that provide paid services. This is why Dish Network displays a message every 12 hours (with lots of fine print details)indicating that this a digital satellite service, Dish authorized equipment...blah, blah, blah....
If you were a subscribed customer with Dish equipment and getting that message that would be a different issue.

The announcer stated "Did you know you are a satellite TV pirate? The only people who can receive this station are the people who have their receivers illegaly modified to intercept Dish Network signals without paying for them".

Not everyone understands the intricacies of this hobby. People have a natural tendency to believe people on the air as those who are fully informed and have the best information at their disposal.

I;m saying point blank that it was deliberate and that Dish Network has wanted to kill true fta since forever.

I agree that the choice to leave it unencrypted appears deliberate. They would be more confident in signal pirates seeing the channel if it is unencrypted since they would be actively fighting the decryption of their signal.

I think the bold statement of "you're a satellite pirate" is wrong, but I put it in the same category as the publishers that put the "if the front cover of this book is missing, this book is STOLEN" in their books. When the cover falls off, they are saying I am in possession of stolen property even though I paid for it. :)

The statements are inaccurate, but not worth more than maybe sending them a polite letter reminding them that their statements are in fact not true.
