Fighter (1999)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006IUHJ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> On the surface, this doesn't sound like all that interesting of a documentary: 2 old men in their 70s retrace a journey one of them made during World War II through Europe.

Zoom in a little, and you see that it was not just any journey, it was one man's escape from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Jan Weiner wanted to join the British to fight against his homeland's occupiers. He succeeded, returned to Prague after the war, only to be persecuted and imprisoned by the Communists there a few years later, after which he emigrated to the US where he lives today.

The other old man is Arnold Lustig, a distinguished Czech writer and fellow Czech Jew who survived a Nazi concentration camp and stayed in Czechoslovakia all the way up to the present. Not only that, but Lustig was a member of the Communist Party though he joined out of genuine naivete/idealism and stayed in it mainly out of economic and social convenience, like the majority of members.

Weiner is a highly spirited, passionate and pugnacious man; Lustig is also very young for his years but is more of the playful, ironic and detached intellectual. Both men carry the film effortlessly with their own anecdotes, descriptions, and sheer force of personality...and their quickly developing antagonism towards each other which blows up near the end and cuts short the trip.

Two fascinating characters, some beautiful and fascinating places, and the timeless clash between the spirit of the fighter versus the spirit of the survivor, between rage and forgiveness, holding on and letting go.

I was very sad when the two men parted and the film ended...there was a lot more to explore underneath the surface, if only Weiner could've put up with it.</p>

Starring: Arnost Lustig Director: Studio: First Run Features Aspect ratio 1.33 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

1080iBeVuMin: This was an excellent documentary about these two old Czech Jewish men and how they coped with WW2 and afterwards. One escaped the Nazi invasion, and the other stayed on into the Soviet occupation. They met each other in the U.S. as older men. In this documentary they retrace the steps of the one who escaped earlier, hiding under a train, and they visit villages along the way, telling his difficult and intriguing story. Lots of discussion by these two guys about what they saw and how they felt, and how they feel about it today. Very honest and revealing footage. If you enjoy documentaries about WW2 survivors, this one is not to be missed!

Castle Keep (1975)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008EYDQ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Toward the end of World War II, a small company of American GI's occupy an ancient castle. Their commander has an affair with the countess in resident. One guy falls in love with a Volkswagon. A baker among them moves in with another baker's wife. A group of shell shocked holy rollers wander the bombed out streets. A GI art historian tries vainly to protect the castle and its masterpieces.</p>

Starring: Burt Lancaster Director: Sydney Pollack Studio: Columbia Tristar Hom Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 2.5 I did not like it although one of my favorite gendre is War movies. I had a hard time following what it was all about. I guess it was about a castle. Don't know but maybe someone else can explain it better. Not showing it OAR hurt the movie but PQ was great.

The Omega Man (1971)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0790742802.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Robert Neville, a doctor, due to an experimental vaccine, is the only survivor of an apocalyptic war waged with biological weapons. The plague caused by the war has killed everyone else except for a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people calling themselves "The Family". The plague has caused them to become sensitive to light, as well as homicidally psychotic. They believe science and technology to be the cause of the war and their punishment, and Neville, as the last symbol of science, the old world, and a "user of the wheel", must die. Neville, using electricty, machinery, and science attempts to hold them at bay.</p>

Starring: Charlton Heston, Anthony Zerbe Director: Boris Sagal Studio: Warner Home Video Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 3.5 stars I love Charlton Heston acting. He is very cool. This is your tipical sci-fi. I thought the story was great! It leaves you hanging at the end asking for a sequel but I guess a sequel without Charlton would have not made any sense. It was not OAR but it would have been fantastic if it had been.

Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6301978447.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Robert Wise, who directed the classic boxing noir The Set-Up in 1948, also made this 1956 biopic about the life of Rocky Graziano, a one-time juvenile delinquent from New York's back streets who became World Middleweight Champion. Paul Newman, though in the thick of his mannered, Method approach to acting in those days, is wonderful as the impoverished young Graziano, who finds success in the ring through a combination of talent, hope, and tenacity. The script by Ernest Lehman is layered with well-meaning social-consciousness and observations about the effects of poverty, but that is less impressive than cinematographer Joseph Ruttenberg's outstanding footage of fight scenes. Steve McQueen and Robert Loggia made their screen debuts with this film. --Tom Keogh.</p>

Starring: Paul Newman, Pier Angeli Director: Robert Wise Studio: Warner Studios Aspect ratio 1.75 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 2.5 stars : Not a very good movie, and the boxing scenes are atrocious -- but worth watching at least a little of it just to see the 1956 version of Paul Newman playing the punchy palooka. Newman's really fun to watch here. And the PQ's pretty good, too.

Napoleon (1997)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0792899423.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Napoleon is a little dog that lives in Sydney, Australia. He and his mother live with a family, but Napoleon loves to dream about meeting the wild dogs that live far away, and eventually becoming one himself. There he meets all kinds of different animals; some of them are friendly, but some aren't. With the help of a parakeet friend he learns the secrets of living alone in the island and defending himself from wild animals. He goes in search of the wild dogs, whom he finally finds. He is very happy with them, but then he gets homesick and starts to miss his mother, so he decides to go home again.</p>

Starring: Director: Mario Andreacchio Studio: Orion Home Video Aspect ratio

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 1.5 stars : A cute puppy and pretty good PQ. Other than that, this movie doesn't have much to offer. I admit, however, that I am probably not its target audience. If it was good though, that shouldn't matter. It isn't good. But it is harmless and inoffensive, and perhaps there are some children that might enjoy it.

Graveyard Shift (1990)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000063URH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Stephen King took you to the edge with The Shining and Pet Sematary. This time... he pushes you over. From horror master Stephen King comes his most terror-filled take yet. Gates Falls, Maine. When an abandoned textile mill is reopened, several employees meet mysterious deaths. The link between the killings: all occurred between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. - the Graveyard Shift. The sadistic mill foreman (Stephen Macht) has chosen a group to clean up the mill's rat-infested basement. But what the workers find is a subterranean maze of tunnels leading to the cemetery - and an unimaginable horror that comes alive in the dead of the night.</p>

Starring: David Andrews, Kelly Wolf Director: Ralph S. Singleton Studio: Paramount Home Video Aspect ratio 1.85:1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 4.0 Awesome, Bloody, Rats, screams, etc. This one surprised me and it was quite excellent. PQ was great!

Return of the Magnificent Seven (1966)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000059TFX.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Yul Brynner returns to lead a new band of gunfighters in this sequel to the classic Magnificent Seven, which delivers enough Western action to please genre fans. Return has Brynner's Chris recruiting a new Seven to rescue original member Chico (Julian Mateos, replacing Horst Buchholz), who has been kidnapped by a bandit (Emilio Fernandez). The Magnificent Seven is such an established critical and fan favorite that comparisons between it and Return will inevitably yield negative reactions, and while some aspects of the second film are inferior (in particular, a colorless new Seven, save for veteran scene-stealers Claude Akins and Warren Oates), it's capably directed by Western specialist Burt Kennedy, who is aided in no small part by returning composer Elmer Bernstein's rousing score. Two sequels followed--Guns of the Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride!--with George Kennedy and Lee Van Cleef, respectively, in the Brynner role. --Paul Gaita.</p>

Starring: Yul Brynner Director: Burt Kennedy Studio: MGM/UA Video Aspect ratio 2.35:1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 2.5 stars not as good as the Magnificient Seven but it still gives you good entertaining. PQ was ok but OAR would have been much much better

Robbers' Roost (1955)

<p><img border="0" src="http://www.satelliteguys.us/voom/movies/robbersroot.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> A rancher having 6000 head of cattle to get to market hires two gangs that hate each other. He figues each gang will not let the other rustle the cattle. Tex arrives looking for the man that killed his wife and took his horses. Finding his horses he joins the gang that are now riding them. Caught in the battle between the gangs when one double-crosses the other, he now finds the man he is looking for.</p>

Starring: George Montgomery, Richard Boone Director: Sidney Salkow Studio: United Artists Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 2.5 A very young Richard Boone plays on this one. I was in the mood to watch some western today and this one caught me by surprise. Nice western scenery and somewhat interested but with very little depth.

Tales from the Crypt (the documentary)

<p><img border="0" src="http://www.satelliteguys.us/voom/movies/talesfromthecrypt.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> A documentary of the history of Tales from the crypt. Commentarie by George Romero, John Carpenter, and the creator of Tales from the Crypts</p>

Starring: Director: Studio: Aspect ratio 1.33 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 4.5 stars. Wow! This is a must see if you are into the Tales from the Crypt. I was not a fan of the comic books because they were before my time but I am a huge fan of the TV show and the movie. This documentary goes into how it was created, how it was banned (censored) from the general public and its rebirth. George Romero, John Carpenter among others are feature in the documentary and the PQ is just excellent. It is framed 1:33:1. The only problem is the sound. There seems to be some technical problem with the sound otherwise I would have given it a 5!

A Life Apart - Hasidism in America (1997)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005JG6Y.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> In New York City, the Hasidim are a common sight, but their way of life remains a mystery to those outside their community. With their use of Yiddish, their distinctive clothes and their strict observance of Jewish ritual and law, the Hasidim are considered by many an insular people with little connection to mainstream America. And yet their values are those that many Americans find most precious: family, community, and a life of meaning. In this extraordinarily intimate film, seven years in the making, we are taken into the depths of the Hasidim's joyous, sometimes harsh, and often-beautiful world. From mystical tales to mesmerizing music, Rebbes to Holocaust survivors, A Life Apart reveals a strange, insular world few outsiders have seen, and fewer yet could imagine. </p>

Starring: Director:Menachem Daum, Oren Rudavsky Studio: First Run Features Aspect ratio 1.33 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 4.0 powerful, very interested, full of information. This is one documentary that I recommend as I learned a lot that I did not know and sometimes the worst part is not to know somebody else upbringing, culture, religion, values and way of living. Formated at 1:33:1 and PQ looked from good to very good depending on the segment that it was shown as lots of it is video and not film.

Krush Groove (1985)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00007BK2Q.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> In this movie based on the life of Russel Simmons, hot young record producer/manager Russel Walker has all the hottest acts on the record label Krush Groove records. The acts include Run-DMC, Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Kurtis Blow. When Run-DMC has a hit record and Russel doesn't have the money to press records he borrows money from a drug dealer/loan shark. At the same time Russel and Run are both competing for the heart of Sheila E.</p>

Starring: Director: Michael Schultz Studio: Warner Home Video Aspect ratio 1:85:1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 4 stars : Talk about a film that captures the essence of an era! Here it is - the early days of rap in all it's "funky fresh" and "def" glory. I was about 14 when this came out and thought it was the greatest movie ever. I hadn't seen it since, until this morning. It may be even better now, when you can look at the featured artists with an eye on historical perspective and their importance to music. Run-DMC (when Reverend Run was just plain "Run" and DMC still had the best voice in rap and Jam Master Jay (rest in peace) was still jammin'). Kurtis Blow at the top of his game. Introductions to LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys and New Edition. The Fat Boys in all their silliness. And Sheila E doing "Holly Rock" and "A Love Bizarre" in 5.1? Priceless! The story was very predictable and the acting quite awful, but this film gets HIGH marks for sound (and top marks for soundtrack!) and history. If you like rap and haven't seen this film, you must watch it.

Sean Mota: 3.5 stars I have to agree with Timm on this one. Just the price of the music makes it worthy to watch.

The Greatest (1977)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6302272629.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Ali plays himself impressively in this biography of his remarkable boxing career. The greatest commands the screen alongside such actors as Robert Duval, Ernest Borgnine and James Earl Jones. The film is not as powerful, moving or exciting as it could have been and so is a slightly disappointing dramatization of a legendary boxing story. But, of course, just to see Ali doing what he does best (entertaining out of the ring as well as in) is a must for most. So, see it.</p>

Starring: Muhammad Ali, Ernest Borgnine Director: Tom Gries, Monte Hellman Studio: Columbia/Tristar Studios Aspect ratio 1:85:1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 3 stars : A great story about a great man who does great things. Great PQ, somewhat less than great sound (not very surroundy at all). Muhammad Ali sure could box, but certainly isn't the greatest actor (but I've seen worse performances by people who actually do it for a living!).

The Monster Squad (1987)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6300263681.01.LZZZZZZZ.gif" align="left" hspace="5"> Young kids form a club that is devoted to monsters, but soon get more than they bargained for when Count Dracula adjourns to Earth, accompanied by Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Gillman. The uglies are in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world. Our heroes - the Monster Squad are the only ones daring to stand in their way.</p>

Starring: Andre Gower, Robby Kiger Director: Fred Dekker
Studio: Vestron Video Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 3.5 stars Excellent movie. Very often forgotten for its simplicity. PQ was very good but would have been excellent if shown in its OAR. Quite a squad of monsters reunite for this one. I enjoyed a whole lot.

Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001LQJMQ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest. Bubba Ho-Tep is partially about Elvis Presley and partially about the title character, an Egyptian cowboy zombie, but mostly it is about camp. The movie is equal parts story and back story. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn't really die, ending up instead in a rest home in East Texas with JFK (played by Ossie Davis), who was dyed black and had his brain removed, presumably for reasons of national security. Campbell and Davis realize that something strange is going on when their rest-home compatriots start dropping off suspiciously. The whole movie leads up to a final showdown to the death with the Egyptian cowboy zombie who has been sucking the souls of their fellow residents because he thought no one would notice. The movie unfolds a bit slowly; it is, after all, a geriatrics-fight-Egyptian-cowboy-zombie movie. However, one wishes this self-conscious movie's pacing took its cue from the atypically fast-moving zombie instead of from the senior-citizen Elvis and JFK. In the end, though, Campbell is flawless as the aged King; his accent, intonations, glasses, and trademark karate are at the same time sincere and over the top. --Brian Saltzman.</p>

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis Director: Don Coscarelli
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 4.0 stars I found the story to be very original and very well thought. I loved it. It was funny and entertaining. Watch it if you like a good story.

TheTimm: 4 stars : Clever, clever, clever. Very well-written with much attention to detail. The whole thing is amusing, while at the same time addressing serious issues such as aging, and treatment of & attitudes toward the elderly. A true original. Great PQ and sound.

A Chorus Line (1985)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008973A.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> If you've never seen this popular production performed on stage in its original form as one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history, the movie version is probably your next best option--heck, it's your only option! But beware the major difference between the experience of stage and screen, because A Chorus Line is a perfect example of a show that doesn't translate well from one medium to another. Director Richard Attenborough gives it his best shot, cutting some of the production numbers and adding new ones while "opening up" the show to explore the off-stage lives of struggling performers as they prepare for another grueling audition. Michael Douglas plays the harsh, workaholic director who puts the auditioning "gypsies" through the paces, winnowing a large group of hopefuls down to eight lucky cast members for his next big show. There's a subplot about the director's former girlfriend, who returns for the big audition, and along the way the other hopefuls sing and dance while revealing their various hopes and fears. On screen, the musical works best when focused on its dramatic passages; otherwise it's impossible to escape the fact that this material is best suited to live performance. --Jeff Shannon.</p>

Starring: Michael Douglas, Terrence Mann Director: Richard Attenborough Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 3.0 As I agree with Timm, I was not thrilled about the movie itself but the dancing and the music kept me watching it and the fact that it was OAR made a hughe difference to the PQ and to the cinematic viewing of the movie. Thanks VoOM for bringing this in OAR.

TheTimm: 2 stars : While most of this movie was visually boring (despite a pretty good PQ), a few scenes were quite impressive. The sound was excellent (athough I wasn't crazy about the actual songs) - with a terrific surround mix. I found the story pretty dull, but enjoyed the pretty girls in their form-fitting dancer outfits. If I didn't have surround sound, I probably wouldn't have lasted very long into this one.

Christina's House (1999)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005NGAP.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Family moves into a huge old house as a series of murders are plaguing the community and it appears someone else is living in the house and they are the next victims. Suspenseful flick is entertaining, if a bit too predictable, and has an appealing (and hot looking) cast and a good finale. Rated R; Violence, Profanity, and Sexual Situations..</p>

Starring: Gavin Wilding Director: Richard Attenborough Studio: Mgm/Ua Studios Aspect ratio 1.85:1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 2.5 stars : Not a big fan of the genre, but I found this movie to be pretty darned watchable -- in no small part due to the loveliness of the lead actress (Allison Lange I think?). She's adorable. The movie itself offers good PQ and sound, and a story that's not too retarded.

Abandon Ship (1957)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6304330170.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> After their luxury liner is sunk, a group of over twenty survivors take refuge in a life boat made for only nine. Included in the group are an old opera singer, a nuclear physicist, his wife and child, a General, a play-write and his dog, a college professor, a gambler and his mistress, the ship's nurse, and several members of the crew, including the Captain and executive officer. Soon, the captain dies from his injuries. The executive officer must take charge, and as a hurricane approaches, and their food and water run out, he must decide who to put over the side, and who stays and gets a chance at survival.</p>

Starring: Tyrone Power, Mai Zetterling Director: Richard Sale Studio: Columbia/Tristar Studios Aspect ratio

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota: 3.5 stars. Quite an interested B&W movie. Excellent acting and story was quite good. A group of survivors (26) for a small boat that is only made to hold 9 and at most 15. The captain in charge makes the decision that only 15 can ride on the boat. The decision is not easy and this is were the acting gets very good. Don't miss it and do not dismiss the movie because is B&W. It is based on a true story and it is quite good.

Natural Born Killers (1994)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00003BDXG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like Natural Born Killers to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography. --Tom Keogh </p>

Starring: Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis Director: Oliver Stone Studio: Vidmark/Trimark Aspect ratio 1.85:1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 5 stars : Few movies have been made that I enjoy watching as much as this one. Juliette Lewis is brilliant. Oliver Stone is a frickin' genius. There is no end to the creativity in this film. The story is absolutely gripping and all-too-real. Excellent soundtrack that adds a lot to the feel of the movie. Great acting performances all around. Did I mention Juliette Lewis? Pretty darned good HD treatment as well. No complaints about the PQ (a lot of it was supposed to look like that!), and the sound was very good and explosive. I may not leave the house today.

Sean Mota: 4.0 Lots lots of violence on this one but the overall movie was good and keep you in your seats to what these maniacs were going to do next.

Bad Boys (1983)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005NKSN.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Sean Penn delivered a star-making one-two punch in the early '80s, debuting as stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and turning up only a few months later, all but unrecognizable, as a steel-nerved teenage convict in this raw, powerful prison drama--and both performances hold up remarkably well. While the story line of Bad Boys has the familiar contours of classic jailhouse melodrama (Penn's fearless Mick stands tall against a bullying Latino gang boss played by Esai Morales), the sense of tightly wound raw force the actor conveys is so convincing that it's actually a little scary. It goes way beyond the blunt-force impact of a standard action star; Mick's acts of violence are expressions of personality, practically eruptions of his life force. The authenticity of this portrayal is reinforced by the closely observed production design: the youth-prison set is so cunningly textured that many moviegoers took it for the real thing. Ally Sheedy also made her film debut in Bad Boys, as the girl Mick leaves behind on the outside. --David Chute </p>

Starring: Sean Penn, Reni Santoni Director: Rick Rosenthal Studio: Anchor Bay Entertainment Aspect ratio 1.85:1

Voomer Reviews:

TheTimm: 4 stars : Young punks in a young-punk prison acting like young punks. Good stuff. Sean Penn could act way back then, too. Esai Morales (later of NYPD Blue) has gotten much better over the years. One of the great fight-scene endings - the whole scene kinda stays with ya. PQ and sound were nothing to write home about, but good enough.

Sean Mota: 4.0 stars this is the original one with Sean Penn. Never watched it before but Sean Penn was really good on this one. The story was very good. I finally caught it. Give it a try. I haven't watched the second one either so I hope to watch it and compare.
