Is 3-D TV For Real?

They brought up points like do you really want to watch with glasses in the sweet spot of the viewing angle? A lot of people do other things while watching TV, 3D would interfere.

Nope. Article got it wrong. 3D will never match the market penetration of 8 track! ;)

No cardboard glasses.....

Whether you like 3D or not, it is taking off faster than any one ever anticiapted. I have been unable, as have most, to obtain the Samsung plasma display because BB currently has a market on them. Currently BB has a 2-3 week waiting period on the 63C8000 display. The initial Panasonic VT20 series sold out in less than a week.

3D is not universal viewing, it is intended for special programming. I have as much desire to have 3D viewing as I do a DBOX system in my home theater. Both cost about the same these days. However, 3D today, has no program source library. While this is soon to change, we're not there yet.
Given the choice between spending money today on DBOX or 3D, I'd choose DBOX because it has a wide variety of program sources. Put 3D on next years budget when we have programming.

I realize that DirecTV and Dish Network are planning to have 3D channels, but let's wait for the real reviews on these before we pull the trigger. Remember the first HDTV channels on HBO? We looked forward to that one new HD movie per month as the others were just upconverts. It took years before HD was ubiquitous. Will 3D be ubiquitous in 8 years? I doubt it at least no more than DBOX is today.

The Apple Newton took off fast, too.....

Many of us are expecting a rapidly expanding bright star, followed by flameout and niche status. The ONLY reason I think 3D has any chance at all is 3D porn. Nobody ever made any money betting against porn.

Amazon has had the Samsung Plasmas. And at good prices. Currently appear to be out of the 8 series plasma's, but have the 7's. I went with the smallest (PN50C7000) for my bedroom to experiment with 3d including 3d gaming. Expect delivery later today.
